have to do with me?’’ The nuns said: ‘‘Even though that all may be<br />
so, we still hope that you in your kind compassion will save us <strong>and</strong><br />
ferry us across so we may be reborn in heaven.’’<br />
When you’re deluded, you w<strong>and</strong>er in darkness on the six<br />
pathways; 17<br />
Once you’re enlightened, in Emptiness there is no coming or going.<br />
Namo Guanshiyin pusa<br />
‘‘Turn around <strong>and</strong> you find the road to the Western Paradise!<br />
All that’s needed is for a person to be sincere in his vow!’’<br />
The princess right then <strong>and</strong> there pronounced a great vow,<br />
Vowing to ferry across the nuns <strong>and</strong> free them from suffering:<br />
‘‘If this disciple successfully achieves the right fruit, may<br />
All buddhas <strong>of</strong> a thous<strong>and</strong> worlds descend to this darkness!’’<br />
As soon as she spoke her vow, she received a response, as<br />
Red <strong>and</strong> white lotus flowers opened <strong>and</strong> filled the city walls.<br />
The bodhisattva Kṡitigarbha then addressed her as follows: 18<br />
‘‘Hail to Your Highness! Tell me, what brings you here?’’<br />
The princess greeted him with a bow <strong>and</strong> promptly replied,<br />
As with lowered head <strong>and</strong> palms pressed together she said:<br />
‘‘Kind reverend, many thanks for descending in person<br />
And manifesting your golden body in this world <strong>of</strong> hells.<br />
My only wish is that these nuns may leave this earth-prison,<br />
And ascend to heaven to w<strong>and</strong>er in freedom <strong>and</strong> joy.’’<br />
As soon as the princess had pronounced her vow, she saw a bright<br />
light, dazzling <strong>and</strong> blinding. A hundred musicians all played in unison,<br />
<strong>and</strong> the world <strong>of</strong> the hells was filled with white <strong>and</strong> red lotus<br />
flowers. In the hall <strong>of</strong> King Yama appeared a five-colored auspicious<br />
light. At that time the bodhisattva Kṡitigarbha, seated on his maṅi<br />
throne, emitted a huge white light, which banished the darkness <strong>of</strong><br />
the earth-prisons. The yakṡas bowed their h<strong>and</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> the prison<br />
guards kowtowed. The princess quickly curtsied, <strong>and</strong> said: ‘‘Great<br />
Teacher, when your disciple first left the family, the convent to<br />
which she belonged was called White Sparrow. Because I disobeyed<br />
my father’s comm<strong>and</strong>, he tried to burn the convent to the ground,<br />
which frightened some nuns to death. This is my fault, <strong>and</strong> I hope<br />
that in your kind compassion you will save them <strong>and</strong> ferry them
