Before she had finished her vow, her tears gushed down,<br />
Piteously weeping <strong>and</strong> wailing she prayed to the gods.<br />
Suddenly she saw a youth <strong>and</strong> maiden <strong>of</strong> spectacular beauty<br />
—Black hair done up in a bun, temple locks trailing—<br />
Who, with banners in their h<strong>and</strong>s, came to guide her.<br />
As soon as the princess saw them, she asked them why.<br />
The youth <strong>and</strong> maiden folded their h<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> deeply bowed,<br />
And with bowed head <strong>and</strong> s<strong>of</strong>t words they informed her:<br />
‘‘We are the green boy <strong>and</strong> girl <strong>of</strong> the Office <strong>of</strong> Goodness,<br />
We have been ordered by our king to welcome you here.<br />
Good people must all be welcomed by us, boy <strong>and</strong> girl,<br />
But sinners whose sins are many are captured by yakṡas. 15<br />
May we invite Your Highness to visit the realm <strong>of</strong> shade<br />
And meet with the Lord <strong>of</strong> Shade in his Yiyang Hall.’’<br />
When the princess heard this, she could not help being surprised:<br />
‘‘You belong to the realm <strong>of</strong> shade, so what are you doing here, in<br />
our world <strong>of</strong> light?’’ The youth <strong>and</strong> maiden replied: ‘‘We are here<br />
in the realm <strong>of</strong> shade!’’ The princess then asked: ‘‘But how could I<br />
have ended up in the realm <strong>of</strong> shade?’’ The youth <strong>and</strong> maiden replied:<br />
‘‘Because you refused to take a husb<strong>and</strong>, you were strangled<br />
to death by your father, that’s why you’ve come to the realm <strong>of</strong><br />
shade! We have long heard <strong>of</strong> Your Highness’s great kindness <strong>and</strong><br />
great compassion <strong>and</strong> the l<strong>of</strong>ty transcendence <strong>of</strong> your style in the<br />
Way. The Three Officials reported this matter, <strong>and</strong> the Ten Kings<br />
are delighted to meet you. An edict was issued far <strong>and</strong> wide to<br />
make sure you would be welcomed <strong>and</strong> invited. There’s no need<br />
to be frightened; let’s set out immediately on our journey.’’ Only<br />
then did the princess realize that she had arrived on the road to<br />
the Yellow Springs.<br />
Don’t think, while alive, that there will be no retribution,<br />
As soon as you have died, it all will be perfectly clear.<br />

Once the princess knew she’d arrived in the realm <strong>of</strong> shade,<br />
She was fearful <strong>and</strong> flustered, <strong>and</strong> her tears poured down.<br />
In this deep <strong>and</strong> black darkness she had no idea <strong>of</strong> direction,<br />
At the prospect <strong>of</strong> the hidden road she was filled with pain.
