About the Author
Wilt L. Idema (Ph.D. Leiden University 1974) teaches Chinese literature
at Harvard University. His main area of research is Chinese
vernacular literature of the later imperial dynasties, including fiction,
drama, and narrative ballads. His numerous publications on
these subjects include both studies and translations. In recent years
he has become increasingly interested in the interactions between
popular literature and popular religion, and in women’s literature.
His more recent publications in English include A Guide to Chinese
Literature (with Lloyd Haft; University of Michigan Center for Chinese
Studies, 1997), The Red Brush: Writing Women of Imperial
China (with Beata Grant; Harvard University Asia Center, 2004),
and Meng Jiangnü Brings Down the Great Wall: Ten Versions of a
Chinese Legend (University of Washington Press, 2008).
