defend their lands and have undergone various occupations
from other people during their national history. Hence we
think, it stems the concern of Albanian intellectuals to defend
at all costs our national history. Their demand and concern is
right; historians have a duty to write history based on facts and
documents, far from the spirit of contempt and hatred for the
other neighboring peoples. Every Albanian intellectual must
have in view such a right request. We know that history, is not
repeated the same as before. Relations between the countries and
peoples of the Balkans have changed; these relationships evolve
in favor of the spirit of European cooperation and integration. In
these conditions, many older formulations of the history of the
Balkan peoples can be reviewed and corrected, without having
to cause severe controversy, proceeding from the positions of
an emphasized nationalism. characteristic for the period of the
communist dictatorship.
History needs historians with extensive professional
capacities. People are sensitive to their history; the task of historians
is to write and to enrich our history, without encouraging the
people’s concern and anger. Today, historians are free to write
history. No historian is under “political pressure” to distort the
history of the country and of the prominent personalities of the
national history. That time has already passed for historians once
and forever, after the democratic processes of the `90s, which
freed the Albanian historiography from the positions of the
violent communist politicization and deformation.
