A REVIEW ON THE FIGURE, PERSONALITY AND<br />

ACTIVITY OF AQIF PASHA ELBASANI<br />

For Aqif Pasha Elbasani (or Biçakçi1, as he is often known<br />

in the documents) as a political and historical personality, as<br />

a statesman and as among the most prominent figures of the<br />

Albanian national movement before and after the independence<br />

of Albania, as an unyielding fighter for the unification of the<br />

Albanian territories in a national state, as one of the most<br />

prominent activists of the Albanian national history for the<br />

freedom and independence of Albania and for the building,<br />

consolidating the democratization of the independent Albanian<br />

state, has not much been written and talked of. However, for<br />

reasons known and already overcome, even nowadays, in the<br />

period of democracy, there are not yet works to the extent that<br />

he deserves and that belong to this personality of the outstanding<br />

contributions in the history of Albanian nation. The period of<br />

which assured and guaranteed the freedom of thought<br />

and research allowed and favored the revaluation and revising<br />

process of history, of its events and figures, putting in its place<br />

the historical truth with the necessary scientific objectivity. We<br />

hope and believe that this modest paper presented for this great<br />

figure of our national history is a step towards further lighting of<br />

his activity.<br />

Aqif Pasha Elbasani was a political activist during a time<br />

period that begins with the last decade of the nineteenth century,<br />

when he was included in the Albanian National Movement and<br />

by the end of the first quarter of the twentieth century, when<br />

he died in 1926. Fully, 36 years of intense activity in service<br />
