THE FIRST POET OF ISLAM AND THE
SPOKESMAN OF PROPHET MUHAMMAD
summary in english
u n i v e r s
286
Hassan ibn Thabit was one of the great Arab poets of his time,
and also one of the Sahabs or Companions of the Prophet
Muhammad, peace be upon him. In this short writing we will
try to give a concise overview of his life and work. All his work
is released in the form of a divan, which is widely spread in the
world libraries, even in the west. His verses are studied and
translated into Western languages, as well as in English and
Russian. An important feature of Hasan’s poem is that it is based
on the verses (ajets) of Qur’an and in the early history of Islam.
In his verses there are met a number of Koranic phrases. Taking
into consideration that the later Muslim scholars have opposed
the use of the Koranic verses in poetry, the use of such phrases
shows unmistakably, that when Hasan wrote these poems,
the Qur’an was not yet collected in its final form. Let us refer
to the hadiths or sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be
upon him, for Hasan extracted from two collections of hadiths
of Bukhari and Muslim, widely accepted by the entire Muslim
world. Hasan has been widely recognized by the clerics (hodjas)
of different generations, as it is shown to us by H. Ibrahim
Dalliu in his verses, where he included a few verses from Hasan
illustrating the presentation the Prophet Muhammad in his work.
The values of Hasan ibn Thabit, as a poet, are indisputable, but
his work is not widely known for the art-loving Albanian public.
