ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE<br />
The following section contains brief descriptions of the duties and responsibilities of various<br />
<strong>University</strong> officers and administrative structures. It also contains descriptions of the channels<br />
of communication available to administrative personnel and to the faculty.<br />
Administrative Officers<br />
The President is responsible to the <strong>Fairmont</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> Board of Governors. As chief<br />
administrative officer and under the direction of the Chancellor, the President has general<br />
authority and responsibility for the institution within the policies and regulations of the<br />
Board and of other state and federal authorities.<br />
The President’s Cabinet includes the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the<br />
Vice President for Administrative and Fiscal Affairs, the Vice President for Student Services,<br />
the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, the Vice President and Chief Information<br />
Officer, the Director of Institutional Research, and the Director of Communications.<br />
The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs is the chief academic and<br />
administrative officer of <strong>Fairmont</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> and is directly responsible to the<br />
President. The Provost plans, develops, and coordinates the <strong>University</strong>’s academic policies<br />
and programs.<br />
The Associate Provost & Director of Graduate Studies is directly responsible to<br />
the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and assists in the conduct of the<br />
academic functions of the <strong>University</strong>. When necessary, the Associate Provost assumes<br />
responsibility for academic matters in the absence of the Provost and Vice President<br />
for Academic Affairs. Additionally, in conjunction with the Graduate Studies Council,<br />
the Director of Graduate Studies oversees the policies governing graduate education,<br />
monitors the quality of graduate programs, and sets goals for enhancing graduate<br />
education at <strong>Fairmont</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />
The Assistant Vice President for Academic Services reports to the Provost and<br />
Vice President for Academic Affairs and is responsible for managing course schedules<br />
and the operation of the Gaston Caperton Center in Clarksburg.<br />
College/School Deans, Associate Deans, and Department Chairs are responsible<br />
to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and are charged with<br />
implementing academic policies. They have authority to supervise the academic<br />
functions of faculty members within their academic units.<br />
The Coordinator of the Academic Advising Center reports to the Provost and Vice<br />
President for Academic Affairs and coordinates all academic advising services,<br />
including those for students who have not selected a degree program and for all<br />
transfer and new students during summer registration.
