The School of Nursing and Allied Health Administration submits the following new promotion and<br />

tenure criteria in nursing.<br />

1. Professor/Senior Level and Professor: To be eligible to apply for promotion to the rank of<br />

professor/ senior and professor, a faculty member must meet the minimum <strong>University</strong><br />

requirements as outlined under Standards for Academic Rank and Promotion.<br />

2. Associate Professor/ Senior: To be eligible to apply for promotion to the rank of associate<br />

professor/ senior, a faculty member must meet the following criteria: ]<br />

a. Meet the time requirements as outlined by the <strong>University</strong> for promotion in rank<br />

AND<br />

b. Meet criteria currently in effect for the rank of Associate Professor in Nursing.<br />

3. Associate Professor: To be eligible to apply for promotion and/or tenure to the rank of<br />

associate professor, a faculty member must meet the following criteria:<br />

a. Hold current national certification by one of the following organizations: National<br />

Association of Pediatric Nurse Associates and Practitioners (NAPNAP); Association<br />

of Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN); NLN Certified<br />

Nurse Educator (CNE); American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or<br />

certification accepted by the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered<br />

Professional Nurses for Advanced Nursing Practice AND<br />

b. Demonstrate professional and scholarly excellence AND<br />

c. Meet the time requirements as outlined by the <strong>University</strong> for promotion in rank<br />

AND<br />

d. Meet criteria currently in effect for the rank of Assistant Professor in Nursing.<br />

4. Assistant Professor: To be eligible to apply for promotion and/or tenure to the rank of<br />

assistant professor, a faculty member must meet the following criteria:<br />

a. Hold a master’s degree in nursing AND<br />

b. Demonstrate professional and scholarly stature AND<br />

c. Meet the time requirements as outlined by the <strong>University</strong> for promotion in rank<br />

AND<br />

d. Meet criteria currently in effect for the rank of Instructor in Nursing.<br />

5. Instructor: To be eligible to apply for the rank of instructor, a faculty member must meet<br />

the following criteria:<br />

a. Hold a bachelor’s degree in nursing AND<br />

b. Have a minimum of 3 years clinical experience as a registered nurse AND<br />

c. Hold an unencumbered West Virginia RN license;<br />

d. For continued employment, the instructor must be enrolled in a MSN program<br />

within one year of being hired and the MSN must be completed within three years<br />

from the beginning of the MSN program.
