Figure 17 illustrates <strong>the</strong> changes in class composition of wood harvested from <strong>the</strong> study area by district<br />

between 2000 and 2001, showing two indicators of declining <strong>trade</strong> in higher value <strong>timber</strong> compatible <strong>with</strong><br />

evidence presented earlier. Firstly, <strong>the</strong> increase in Class V round wood harvested from Rufiji District,<br />

and secondly <strong>the</strong> decline in Class I round wood harvested from Nachingwea and Kilwa Districts. It is<br />

possible that <strong>the</strong> increase in Class V species is fuelled by high profit margins, <strong>with</strong> selling prices of TZS<br />

300 000 - 425 000/m 3 (Trichilia emetica, Hymenaea verrucosa, Afromosia angolensis) considerably<br />

higher than licence rates (TZS 10 000/m 3 for round wood, equivalent to TZS 30 000/m 3 for sawn wood).<br />
