The recommendation that the ‘Flood and Stream Management Policy (ENV 4)’ be considered during subdivision, the structure planning process and also after subdivision has occurred is not included in Section 12 Biodiversity Conservation Actions for Implementation. Recommend actions relating to the ‘Flood and Stream Management Policy (ENV 4)’ are included in the list of Conservation Actions for Implementation. The action can include a review of the existing policy, its effectiveness and a training program for staff on the use of the Shire’s Policies relating to biodiversity protection. All Shire policies are utilised in assessing applications for development proposals. The recommendation has not been included in Section 12 as an action for implementation as it is already part of standard operating procedures. Comment noted. Box 8 on page 46, Due to the rapid spread of invasive weeds on waterways, it is imperative that all invasive weeds be prohibited from a buffer zone on all waterways. If this is not done, then it is simply a matter of time before the waterways of moderate to high value are threatened and destroyed. Our Friends Groups reserves on creeklines face this challenge constantly due to a lack of policy of this kind. The Shire’s Weed Control Strategy (2002) targets priority weed species many of which occur in creeklines. Where the weeds occur on private land the Shire has no real grounds to action any weed removal. Public education is an important tool in an attempt to identify and control weeds. The Shire promotes resident and community weed control through its brochure: Making Weed Control a Priority – which acts as a guide to the top ten priority weeds in the district and supports the Shire of Kalamunda’s Weed Control Strategy. Friends Groups are vital in the battle to control weeds and are supported through various Shire Initiatives.
