6 Vision Statement<br />
This vision statement is a broad aspirational statement that defines the condition <strong>of</strong><br />
biodiversity for future generations. The vision statement for the <strong>Shire</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kalamunda</strong><br />
with regards to biodiversity conservation was developed by the <strong>Kalamunda</strong> <strong>Local</strong><br />
<strong>Biodiversity</strong> Planning Project Steering Group. This Steering Group included<br />
representatives from Council and the local community. The vision statement<br />
represents the long-term Council direction with regards to biodiversity conservation<br />
and captures the opinion <strong>of</strong> the local community.<br />
The <strong>Shire</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kalamunda</strong>’s vision statement with regard to biodiversity conservation<br />
is:<br />
The <strong>Shire</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kalamunda</strong> will protect, manage and promote the social,<br />
economic and environmental values <strong>of</strong> biodiversity to ensure a lasting<br />
legacy for future generations.<br />
7 An Introduction to Targets<br />
A number <strong>of</strong> high level targets have been developed in recognition <strong>of</strong> the importance<br />
<strong>of</strong> protecting biodiversity prior to degradation <strong>of</strong> the natural environment, due to<br />
development, occurs. It is proposed that these targets will guide the development<br />
and implementation <strong>of</strong> the LBS and ensure common understanding amongst<br />
stakeholders. Targets are useful in establishing priorities for protection.<br />
