8.2.2 Waterways<br />
Waterways are natural areas important for biodiversity conservation as they can<br />
provide important breeding and feeding sites for fauna and can be important in the<br />
maintenance <strong>of</strong> life cycles for specialised plant groups.<br />
A waterway can be a creek, brook, river, or stream, and include a lake, estuary or<br />
inlet at its base. Any waterway in the <strong>Shire</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kalamunda</strong> is likely to be owned and<br />
managed by a number <strong>of</strong> different landowners and organisations.<br />
The <strong>Shire</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kalamunda</strong> contains a number <strong>of</strong> waterways as shown by Figure 4.<br />
The importance <strong>of</strong> waterways within the <strong>Shire</strong> is currently recognised in a number <strong>of</strong><br />
ways:<br />
• Water quality monitoring;<br />
• Management plan development and implementation;<br />
• Policy;<br />
• Support for Friends Group activities; and<br />
• Restoration works.<br />
With regard to policy, the <strong>Shire</strong> has developed a Flood and Stream Management<br />
Policy. The enforcement <strong>of</strong> this policy will help to reduce negative ecological impacts<br />
on waterways within the <strong>Shire</strong>. This policy is not utilised until a development<br />
application is received. The policy needs to be considered during subdivision and<br />
structure planning phases to ensure that the policy can still be enforced after the<br />
subdivision has occurred.<br />
Aside from policy implementation, other activities currently occurring on waterways<br />
around the <strong>Shire</strong> are summarised in Table 10.<br />
