Scholarship Opportunities for<br />

Upperclassmen <strong>St</strong>udents<br />

A prospective Upperclassman award candidate must have<br />

completed Term 1 and Term 2, have achieved academic<br />

excellence and demonstrate financial need. Determinations<br />

are made twice yearly after registration in the spring and<br />

fall. Awards are for one term only, and students can apply<br />

each term. For instructions on how to apply for any of the<br />

upperclassman scholarship programs listed below, contact<br />

Morris Alpert Scholarships<br />

This scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Morris Alpert,<br />

MD, the first Dean of Kingstown Medical College. Each<br />

year several partial tuition scholarships will be awarded to<br />

upperclassmen in Terms 3 through 10 who have achieved<br />

academic excellence and have participated in extracurricular<br />

or community service during their first years of medical school.<br />

Recipients of these awards must also demonstrate financial<br />

need and meet the high moral and ethical standards set by Dr.<br />

Alpert for his students during his tenure on the faculty of <strong>St</strong>.<br />

George’s <strong>University</strong>.<br />

William M. McCord Scholarship<br />

This scholarship is dedicated to the memory of William<br />

M. McCord, MD, a leader in the field of medical<br />

education in the United <strong>St</strong>ates who had a major impact<br />

on the development of <strong>St</strong>. George’s <strong>University</strong> School<br />

of Medicine’s clinical program. These partial tuition<br />

scholarships are awarded to students who withdraw<br />

from a term due to compelling personal reasons, and<br />

when they return to resume their studies suffer undue<br />

financial hardships which affect their ability to pay for their<br />

education.<br />

Need-Based Scholarships for<br />

Non-US <strong>St</strong>udents<br />

International Peace Scholarship<br />

The International Peace Scholarship program is committed<br />

to promoting a student body made up of diverse<br />

nationalities and cultural backgrounds, which in the future<br />

will contribute to a worldwide medical community. Partial<br />

scholarships are awarded to non-US students who exhibit<br />

academic excellence, demonstrate financial need, and who<br />

will return to their home countries as physicians dedicated<br />

to the enhancement of the countries’ medical care systems.<br />

The scholarship application and essay must be submitted by<br />

the following deadlines:<br />

• The deadline for the August class is June 1<br />

• The deadline for the January class is November 1<br />

Global Medicine Scholarship<br />

The Global Medicine Scholarship program is committed to<br />

promoting a student body made up of diverse nationalities<br />

and cultural backgrounds specifically within the Keith B.<br />

Taylor Global Scholars Program, which in the future will<br />

contribute to a worldwide medical community. Partial<br />

scholarships are awarded to non-US students who exhibit<br />

academic excellence, demonstrate financial need, and who<br />

will return to their home countries as physicians dedicated<br />

to the enhancement of the countries’ medical care systems.<br />

Commonwealth Jubilee Scholarship Program<br />

The Commonwealth Jubilee Scholarship Program,<br />

commemorating the 60 years of the Queen’s reign as<br />

the Head of the Commonwealth of Nations, provides for<br />

60 full-tuition scholarships to be awarded to citizens of<br />

Commonwealth nations. Ten scholarships are available for<br />

Doctor of Medicine students in the School of Medicine.<br />

to Apply: A prospective scholarship candidate must<br />

be a resident citizen of a Commonwealth country, have<br />

been accepted to <strong>St</strong>. George’s <strong>University</strong>, and submit an<br />

essay detailing how this award will ultimately benefit the<br />

development of his/her country. The application is available<br />

at sgu.edu/jubilee. The scholarship application and essay<br />

must be submitted by the following deadlines:<br />
