Academic Partnerships<br />

Northumbria <strong>University</strong><br />

Joint Medical Degree Program<br />

<strong>St</strong>. George’s <strong>University</strong> and Northumbria <strong>University</strong> have<br />

entered into an agreement providing an exciting pathway to<br />

becoming a medical doctor. Northumbria <strong>University</strong>, located<br />

in Newcastle upon Tyne, is well known for its excellence<br />

in biomedical sciences and is recognized as a principal<br />

innovator in the field. The agreement links the scientific<br />

aspects of premedical training in the United Kingdom with a<br />

comprehensive and excellent medical education.<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents begin their studies in the School of Life Sciences<br />

at Northumbria <strong>University</strong> in a Diploma of Higher Education<br />

in Medical Sciences, which equates to a Certificate of<br />

Higher Education in Medical Sciences. After successful<br />

completion of the one-year certificate course, qualified<br />

students proceed to Grenada to commence the <strong>St</strong>.<br />

George’s <strong>University</strong> Doctor of Medicine degree program<br />

or alternatively remain at Northumbria in the Keith B. Taylor<br />

Global Scholars Program. <strong>St</strong>udents who opt to remain at<br />

Northumbria <strong>University</strong> will, upon successful completion<br />

of the first year of basic medical sciences, also be awarded<br />

the Diploma of Higher Education in Medical Sciences.<br />

Qualified students accepted into this competitive program<br />

will complete the degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD) after<br />

a total of five years of study.<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents apply initially to Northumbria <strong>University</strong> for the<br />

Medical Sciences Diploma Course. Applicants who meet<br />

the admission criteria for the joint medical program will<br />

the be invited to submit a Supplemental Application to <strong>St</strong>.<br />

George’s <strong>University</strong> School of Medicine. Upon receipt of<br />

the applications, <strong>St</strong>. George’s <strong>University</strong> and Northumbria<br />

<strong>University</strong> will liaise to establish suitable candidates and<br />

dates for interview. An offer for the joint program can only<br />

be made after an interview is conducted. Entry into <strong>St</strong>.<br />

George’s <strong>University</strong> School of Medicine is conditional on a<br />

minimum overall mark of 65% in the Northumbria <strong>University</strong><br />

Medical Sciences Certificate and a satisfactory reference<br />

from Northumbria <strong>University</strong>.<br />

<strong>St</strong>. Thomas <strong>University</strong><br />

Combined BS/MD Program<br />

<strong>St</strong>. Thomas <strong>University</strong> in <strong>St</strong>. Paul, Minnesota, has joined with<br />

<strong>St</strong>. George’s <strong>University</strong> offering students an opportunity<br />

to obtain a BS/MD degree. Qualified students are able<br />

to pursue a career in medicine at <strong>St</strong>. George’s <strong>University</strong><br />

following successful completion of the premedical program<br />

at <strong>St</strong>. Thomas <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Enrolled students begin their studies at <strong>St</strong>. Thomas<br />

<strong>University</strong> where they spend the first three years of the<br />

premedical program. Qualified students then proceed to<br />

Grenada to enter the first year of the <strong>St</strong>. George’s <strong>University</strong><br />

Doctor of Medicine program.<br />

Upon successful completion of their first year at <strong>St</strong>.<br />

George’s <strong>University</strong>, students fulfill the requirements<br />

for the Bachelor of Science in Biology from <strong>St</strong>. Thomas<br />

<strong>University</strong>. Qualified students are then eligible to<br />

complete the three remaining yeas of study at <strong>St</strong>.<br />

George’s <strong>University</strong> leading to the completion of the<br />

Doctor of Medicine degree.<br />
