Bill Lyons, Warner booker, has resigned<br />

to become assistant manager of the RKO<br />

Orpheum . . . Oliver Patrick, Universal salesman,<br />

was snowbound last week in Mallard.<br />

Byron Shapiro attended meetings of Columbia<br />

managers in Chicago January 16. 17<br />

Autry made good use of his time<br />

in Des Moines last week. With two appearances<br />

at KRNT Theatre in one day, Autry<br />

still managed to visit children's wards of<br />

two hospitals, appear on a couple of radio<br />

programs and visit several shut-ins in their<br />

private homes!<br />

John A. Granquist, 54, projectionist at the<br />

Orpheum, died. Funeral services were Monday<br />

119) at the Dahlstrom funeral home. He<br />

is survived by his wife Violet, two brothers<br />

and a sister . . . Doug Taussig, 20th-Fox<br />

exploiteer from New York, was here to line<br />

up promotion for "My Pal Gus." which<br />

opened at the Paramount. A tieup with the<br />

Register and Tribune was arranged and 20th-<br />

Fox offered three prizes—an Argus C-3<br />

camera, valued at $75; sporting goods valued<br />

at $25, and a $25 savings bond—which were<br />

awarded to carriers whose customers sent<br />

in the best reports of outstanding service.<br />

There was also a free showing of the film to<br />

all Register and Tribune carriers.<br />

Black Hills Case Ahead<br />

DEADWOOD. S. D.—Parties to the suit<br />

brought by the Black Hills Amusement Co.<br />

against Verling Geib to void the latter's termination<br />

of the Black Hills lease of the Isis<br />

Theatre here have been directed by Judge<br />

Alex Rentto to file briefs. The court order<br />

followed the completion of testimony. Geib<br />

objected because the BHA kept the Isis<br />

closed while operating another local theatre,<br />

the Deadwood, creating an alleged monopoly<br />

for the latter. The Deadwood was destroyed<br />

by fire, but the Isis still is being kept shuttered<br />

and the town is without an operating<br />

theatre.<br />

To Build Cresco Ozoner<br />

CRESCO. IOWA—Joe Milnar and his son<br />

Keith, operators of the State and drive-in<br />

theatres at Spring Valley. Minn., have purchased<br />

a tract of land one mile west of Cresco<br />

on Highway 9 for construction of a 400-car<br />

drive-in. The airer will be started as early as<br />

possible this spring.<br />

Dismantles Seat to Free Foot<br />

STATE CENTER. IOWA — Theatre owner<br />

John Shultz turned carpenter the other night<br />

after a high school student got his foot<br />

stuck between the seat and the back of<br />

one of the chairs in the theatre. Armed<br />

with screwdriver, pliers and wrench. Shultz<br />

removed the seat, leaving the foot connected<br />

with the ankle bone.<br />
