1907-<strong>2007</strong><br />

JRD <strong>Tata</strong> with Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru<br />

during a visit to Jamshedpur.<br />

Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy <strong>Tata</strong>,<br />

known as JRD to the world, was Chairman of <strong>Tata</strong> <strong>Steel</strong><br />

for almost half a century. He pioneered civil aviation<br />

in the subcontinent in 1932.<br />

JRD was conferred with the Bharat Ratna - India’s highest<br />

civilian award for national service in 1992 and the<br />

Padma Vibhushan - India’s second highest<br />

civilian honour in 1955.<br />

The <strong>Tata</strong>s were one of the first to own a<br />

fully mechanised iron ore mine in India<br />

at Noamundi.<br />

1983 saw the beginning of<br />

the Modernisation of the steel<br />

works that was implemented<br />

in four phases.<br />

The principle of Joint Consultation -<br />

that addresses various aspects of<br />

employee-management relationship -<br />

was introduced for the first time in India<br />

as early as 1920.<br />

The Electric process of steel-making<br />

was used for producing high grade<br />

iron and steel castings in 1938.<br />

<strong>Tata</strong> <strong>Steel</strong> carried out a<br />

2 million tonne expansion<br />

programme (1955-1958)<br />

under a contract with Kaiser<br />

Engineers, USA.
