Whitney Aircraft. Three high pressure turbine blades, conventional
( equiaxed), columinar grain ( directional solidified), and single crystal.
This concept of growing the grain structure continuously along
the blade’s long, most highly stressed axis is called directional solidification.
The single crystal blade has no grain boundaries because
the entire part is grown as a single crystal.
