Philips announced they will discontinue the use of stroboscopic fluorescent backlights
for flat TVs, and instead implement LED backlights, which are already in use in some
higher-end panels.
LED backlights are based in solid-state technology, do not use a bulb, last longer and
consume less energy per lumen.
