CES 2007
Scientific Atlanta showed a newer model 8300 with a Multistream-CARD (M-CARD),
two-way capability, and two tuner
DVR, TTM July 2007 to comply with
the regulation.
OCAP can be deployed later following
the CableCARD version by
downloading the upgrade without the
user knowing.
OCAP downloads are possible if the box has enough memory, not if the box is a 3250
for example, it will not be possible.
The cable operator is not expected to immediately replace existing non-CableCARD
8300 units in subscribers homes when the new one with CableCARD is out, unless
they have inventory available.
The box would perform with the same features but physically would have a
CableCARD inserted into the unit to perform the conditional access function outside
the unit itself, a requirement of the FCC to all cable companies starting July 2007.
OTA
tuners
are not present on STBs because they are judged not add any
value over the cable services, technically possible but the
cable operator is not interested.
Some features of the new STBs (HD200i DVR below)are
MPEG-4,
home
networking
with IP for PC
connection
and coax for
DVR access
from other
STBs in the home, those features are expected to come after
the CableCARD is implemented in STBs to comply with the
mandate.
NAVIC was demo at CES 2007, is a 3 rd party application
development software that could be implemented into
Scientific Atlanta STBs.
A model 4250HDC (pictured
left) with CableCARD is
expected to replace the 3250,
with HDMI, bi-directional
performance. To implement
DCAS it is anticipated that a
new STB will be released.
