Announced and showed the HD-199 HD DVD player at CES 2006 (and a Blu-ray
player as well), however, in March 2006 LG announced that the unit will not be
released as planned. See further below for details on what they are working with.
Onkyo
CES 2007
Onkyo Corporation announced their plan to launch its first HD DVD player for the US
market in 2007, no pricing or exact date were announced.
Onkyo also announced plans to manufacture AV receivers to handle HD DVD with a
HDMI cable for video, audio, and control signals. No specifics about the version of
HDMI were given (hopefully it will be 1.3, 1080p capable, and with hi-bit audio
codecs decoders installed in the AV receiver).

At CES 2006 the company
announced the 2Q06 availability
of their HDV5000 $500 HD DVD
player, which was originally
quoted as able to transfer HD
video up to 1080p via HDMI
output (right).
Updated specs upon release:
HDV5000
$500, Ethernet port, decodes DD Plus, DTS-HD, and Dolby TrueHD (2 ch only),
MPEG-2, MPEG-4 H.264 AVC, and VC1. However, even when the Dolby hi-bit audio
decoders are mandated in HD DVD players they are not even mentioned on the
product spec list in the RCA web site (as well as the DTS specs). The specs above
were quoted as existing in the product; I suggest further research before assuming
the product has those features.

RCA has available software version 1.4 for the HDV5000.
This latest version offers the following improvements:
• Improves HDMI and DVI connectivity with some televisions, monitors and
projectors.
• Reduces HD DVD playback block noise.
• Eliminates high frequency feedback with some televisions, monitors and
projectors via the HDMI connection.
