Value and Implication of DMZ Area
Conservation & Wise use
Prof. Kim, Gi-Gon
Ph. D (UCL, England)
Emeritus of Seoul National University
The armistices agreement in 1953 between two Koreas formed the Demilitarized Zone in
the role of buffer zone and international border between South Korea and North Korea. After
that, the DMZ became an ecological treasure as the national heritage for endangered species
and rarity species and a symbol for the potential in the peace, security and life of Korean
peninsular. The unused fallow culture formed for sixty years is characterized as cultural
landscape.
The conservation and wise use for the DMZ is found its meaning in terms of giving us
special opportunities which we could identify the image and legacy of Korean peninsular as
the beautiful Korea, local development, peace building, eco resources procuring, understanding
culture and ecology, contributing research for the global science. This speech will be dealt
for reviewing the value and meaning of DMZ as follows,
Geological description
Change of land use
Profile of ecosystems
Value assessment of ecosystems
SWOT analysis of ecosystems
Suggestions for national strategy on conservation and wise use
This presentation contains four major messages.
Firstly, the meaning and value for conservation and use in the DMZ might be emphasized
in terms of the future point of view. The Nature in the DMZ is quiet sensitive and has a
variety of ecosystems, which means that the responsible conservation and use needs to be
considered to meet the future value since it could not be identified with the contemporary
science.
Secondly, this speech is introducing the results of international value assessment adjusted
into the DMZ. The natural ecosystems in the DMZ are valued to be protected and appointed
