National Strategies for Conservation and
Wise Use of the Korean DMZ

The Korean Demilitarized zone (DMZ), the scene of the last divided country which
shows the natural restoration process from the devastation by the Korean War, has a unique
sanctuary as well as the highly conserved nature heritage which has rich ecosystems, nature,
and culture. However, it is worried that the sporadic development plans addressed by a
variety of levels would deteriorate the DMZ ecosystems and the negative emotion among
local people are getting expanded because local people recognizes the conservation related
DMZ plans as part of governmentled regulations. Therefore, the Korean Ministry of
Environment in cooperating with the other governments in the last Oct established a
holisticDMZ national strategy on ecological conservation and wise which is managed by the
zoning grade and it includes activating local economy, ecotourism connected ecology,
security and cultural resources. The major actions are as follows,
❖ Conservation
Since armistice demarcation, the first ecological survey on the Middle Western DMZ
area was conducted from 2008 to 2009 and then another survey on the eastern DMZ area
was followed right away. It formed a basis of expanding a survey on candidate sites for
the designation of the protected area. Additionally, UNEP, UNESCO, andinternational
organizations are preparing collaboratively the recommendation for cooperative environmental
management between two Koreas.
On the basis of these serial surveys, the well conserved wetland andecological landscape
area shall be designated asthe national protected area. According to two Koreas’ relations,
the reasonable strategy for ecological conservation and wise use shall be adopted at the
first in the southern part of DMZ with the designation of national park and UNESCO
MAB.
The national environment assessment map classifying the development available area
might be used for managing the DMZ related plans. According to its grade, the
development extent might be decided such as cultivated land, residence land, and tourism
land. The first and second grades, including inside DMZ and northern part from the
civilization line of DMZ, might be conserved abstractly. The degraded area by illegal
deforestation and cultivating, landslide might be restored at the first. Concerning to the
migratory area, the preventive activities for the migratory birds such as shelter offering,
