FORTYNINE DANCE SONGS<br />

This was said to be an old dance that is no longer danced at <strong>Isleta</strong>.<br />

It is widely used among tribes <strong>of</strong> the Plains, <strong>and</strong> was witnessed<br />

among the Winnebago <strong>and</strong> Menominee, five <strong>of</strong> the Winnebago songs<br />

being recorded (Densmore, MS.). In both tribes it was said that the<br />

name <strong>of</strong> the dance was derived from that <strong>of</strong> the regiment in which<br />

certain Indians served in World War I.<br />

It appears to be a very old<br />

social dance that has be<strong>com</strong>e associated with war.<br />

At <strong>Isleta</strong>, the drummer usually led the singing. He started the<br />

songs <strong>and</strong> anyone who wished to join was at liberty to do so.<br />

Analysis.—The thematic structure <strong>of</strong> this melody is unusually interesting.<br />

In the first measure <strong>of</strong> period B we have a reversal <strong>of</strong> the count divisions in the<br />

first measure <strong>of</strong> period A. In the rhythmic unit we have the first measure <strong>of</strong><br />

period A with an additional count, this unit being followed by a repetition <strong>of</strong>
