<strong>Canadian</strong> <strong>Quality</strong> <strong>Milk</strong><br />

Most animal health products that are routinely administered in a repetitive manner to<br />

dairy cows (e.g. oxytocin, prostaglandin, GnRH) are available in products with no<br />

milk withdrawal.<br />

1. Repetitive treatments to the same animal with one drug (e.g. treatments that<br />

are administered at every milking for duration of lactation):<br />

a) The animal’s identification along with the details of the treatment must be<br />

recorded, but in place of an individual record for each treatment, the a start<br />

date is recorded. After the final treatment, the end date is recorded. Some<br />

example formats are:<br />

i. Use a separate page of the Livestock Treatment Record only for cows that<br />

receive these repetitive treatments;<br />

OR,<br />

ii. Write separate “abnormal or treated milk” or “shipping animals” SOPs for<br />

each animal that is undergoing repetitive treatments. Each SOP must<br />

include the details of the treatment and would itself become the treatment<br />

record; therefore, even if the animal is sold, the producer must keep the<br />

SOP for a year or transfer the information to the Livestock Treatment<br />

Record);<br />

OR,<br />

iii. Record the identification of animals receiving repetitive treatments (with<br />

the treatment details) at the top of each page of the treatment records or<br />

month on the calendar (e.g. DHI calendar).<br />

AND,<br />

b) If a producer has a separate system for recording repetitive treatments,<br />

i. The SOP for <strong>Milk</strong>ing Cattle with Treated <strong>Milk</strong> must identify where the<br />

producer records repetitive treatments;<br />

AND,<br />

ii. The SOP for Shipping Cattle must identify where the repetitive treatment<br />

record is. This enables employees to find the record and check it before<br />

shipping an animal.<br />

2. Repeated treatments of different animals with multiple different drugs –<br />

(e.g. breeding synchronization programs that involve a series of injections with<br />

different drugs administered to many cows over a period of time):<br />

a) Design a method to record multiple treatments that ensures treated milk and<br />

meat are not shipped (Note: all the same information required in section 4.6.1<br />

are required in this record). This may be similar to the records described in<br />

section 1a) above, where the treated cows’ identification and details of<br />

treatment are recorded on one page with multiple entries for the dates of<br />

treatment;<br />

AND,<br />

b) Ensure the SOP for <strong>Milk</strong>ing Cattle with Treated <strong>Milk</strong> identifies where the<br />

producer records multiple treatments.<br />
