ABSTRACT<br />

During the last two decades, the issue <strong>of</strong> sustainability <strong>and</strong> tourism has been a more widely<br />

studied topic. This paper presents the results <strong>of</strong> an investigation into the attitudes <strong>of</strong> tourist<br />

accommodation managers to the principles <strong>of</strong> sustainable <strong>development</strong>. This paper presents<br />

the sustainable tourism in viewpoint <strong>of</strong> accommodation business.<br />

Its aim is to examine <strong>and</strong> assess the level <strong>of</strong> interest, underst<strong>and</strong>ing, <strong>and</strong> implementation <strong>of</strong><br />

sustainable tourism management practices within tourist accommodation sector <strong>of</strong> Albania,<br />

especially in small <strong>and</strong> medium tourism enterprises.<br />

The underlying assumption <strong>of</strong> intervention is that every form <strong>of</strong> small <strong>and</strong> medium tourism<br />

in order to be sustainable must consist in the conservation <strong>of</strong> cultural <strong>and</strong> natural values by<br />

demonstrating the potential to the local communities in order to generate sustainable economic<br />

activities.<br />

INTRODUCTION<br />

Tourism is one <strong>of</strong> the biggest industries in the world <strong>and</strong> one <strong>of</strong> the economical sectors which<br />

grows rapidly. It has many impacts, positives <strong>and</strong> negatives ones, in social life <strong>and</strong> on the<br />

environment. It leads to a resources administration in such a way to meet the economical,<br />

social <strong>and</strong> the aesthetics needs, keeping natural originality, ecological base processes, biological<br />

diversity <strong>and</strong> other vital systems.<br />

Tourism is one sector <strong>of</strong> the economy that has endorsed the notion <strong>of</strong> sustainability, at least<br />

in policy statements <strong>and</strong> within some initiatives. This interest reflects a realization that the<br />

viability <strong>of</strong> the industry is dependent on the quality <strong>of</strong> the resource base, whether in the natural,<br />

built or cultural environment.<br />

Tourism-related industries present additional problems for the interpretation <strong>of</strong> sustainability<br />

because the sector is diverse in terms <strong>of</strong> type <strong>and</strong> size <strong>of</strong> businesses <strong>and</strong> the range <strong>of</strong> possible<br />
