Cardiology<br />
• The cardiology speciality at <strong>St</strong>. James’s provides and<br />
interventional and non-interventional service. There are 5<br />
full time consultant cardiologists at <strong>St</strong>. James’s providing<br />
services on an outpatient, inpatient and day case basis<br />
• Cardiology services are provided on a supra-regional<br />
service to patients from South Dublin, mid-Leinster and<br />
North West region<br />
• <strong>St</strong>. James’s <strong>Hospital</strong> has 2 cath labs and during <strong>2010</strong>,<br />
4870 procedures were carried out which translates into a<br />
3% increase on 2009<br />
• The total number of cases includes 43 Transcather Valve<br />
procedures, this is the second year of this program where<br />
patients who are deemed high risk surgical candidates<br />
have their valve procedure performed percutaneously in the<br />
cath lab<br />
• Health promotion is an integral part of the cardiology<br />
services at <strong>St</strong>. James’s and two key elements of this<br />
are the Smoking cessation service and the Cardiac<br />
Rehab programme<br />
• The Smoking Cessation service provide education and<br />
training to clinical staff throughout the hospital as well as<br />
patients. The service has a six week programme which is<br />
focussed on patients who have presented at <strong>St</strong>. James’s<br />
during <strong>2010</strong>, 88 patients attended the programme<br />
The Cardiac Rehab programme<br />
The Cardiac Rehab programme at <strong>St</strong>. James’s offers<br />
secondary prevention education and support to patients after<br />
a cardiac event. The service is nurse coordinated with a multidisciplinary<br />
approach.<br />
Their programme consists of 3 phases, in the fi rst phase the<br />
Co-ordinators visit and educate post cardiac episode<br />
