GEMS Directorate<br />
Introduction<br />
The GEMS Directorate comprises Gastro-intestinal Medicine<br />
and Surgery, General Medicine including Hepatology, Renal<br />
Medicine, Urology, and General Surgery.<br />

Acute Medical Admission Unit (AMAU)<br />
The Acute Medical Admission Unit (AMAU is a designated<br />
area which receives acutely ill medical patients 24/7. The<br />
objective of the AMAU is to facilitate a high quality admission<br />
process, it is staffed by a dedicated team who take a<br />
proactive approach to patient management from the point of<br />
entry into clinical care emphasis is on early diagnosis backed<br />
by prompt investigation and treatment, supported by early<br />
discharge planning.<br />
Since its establishment in 2003, there has been a 60%<br />
reduction in the risk of a hospital death associated with an<br />
emergency medical admission. Early readmissions within one<br />
month, another quality marker, have also approximately halved<br />
over the period to <strong>2010</strong>.<br />
