Clinical Directorates I SaMS<br />
in December following fi fteen years of service to become CEO<br />
and Head of the <strong>St</strong>eno Diabetes Centre in Denmark. The<br />
MDT Diabetic Foot clinic commenced, leading to a reduction<br />
in length of stay and admission avoidance for many Diabetic<br />
patients. Dr. Marie Louise Healy, in collaboration with the ENT<br />
Surgical Services, continues to provide a comprehensive and<br />
committed thyroid oncology service. This service provides<br />
care for approximately 70% of patients diagnosed with thyroid<br />
cancer in the Republic of Ireland.<br />
Ear, Nose & Throat (E.N.T.)<br />
The E.N.T Service provides a local, regional and supraregional<br />
service for patients with head and neck cancer.<br />
Dr. Mark Rafferty resigned as E.N.T consultant in December.<br />
There were 224 new head and neck cancer diagnoses.<br />
GUIDe<br />
The Department of Genito-Urinary Medicine and Infectious<br />
Diseases (GUIDe) incorporates services managing sexual<br />
health, HIV infection, general infectious disease care and<br />
a <strong>Hospital</strong>-wide inpatient consult service.<br />
Initiatives undertaken, included the expansion of community<br />
links for sexual health services, integrated training and<br />
service provision with primary care and the development of a<br />
departmental Quality Initiative in partnership with Abbott. The<br />
commencement of an EPR programme to include electronic<br />
prescribing, which will be the beginning of a pan hospital<br />
e-prescribing initiative.<br />
Professor Bergin and Dr. Clarke were appointed as National<br />
and Regional Leads respectively for HSE Outpatient<br />
Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) programme.<br />
Prof. Fiona Mulcahy and Prof. Colm Bergin continued<br />
as National Specialty Directors, RCPI for their respective<br />
specialties; Genito-Urinary Medicine and Infectious Disease.<br />
Sile Dooley, and Grainne Kelly were successful in obtaining<br />
registered nurse prescribing certifi cates.<br />

Gynaecology<br />
Gynaecological Oncology Service provides a local, regional<br />
and supra-regional service for patients with gynaecological<br />
cancer. There were 280 new gynaecological cancer diagnoses<br />
in <strong>2010</strong>. 1,090 patients reviewed through MDT.<br />
Dr. Katherine Astbury resigned in December to move to<br />
Galway University <strong>Hospital</strong>.<br />
Margaret Walsh (Urodynamics CNS) retired following many<br />
years of dedicated service, The Directorate would like to thank<br />
Margaret for her contribution and commitment and wish her<br />
every success in her future endeavours.<br />
Clinical Neurophysiology<br />
The Department of Clinical Neurophysiology offers a range<br />
of electrodiagnostic investigations. These include Nerve<br />
Conduction <strong>St</strong>udies (NCS), Electromyography (EMG),<br />
Electroencephalography (EEG), Somatosensory Evoked<br />
Potentials (SSEPs), Brainstem Auditory Evoked Responses<br />
(BAERs) and Visual Evoked Responses (VERs) and botulinum<br />
toxin injection. Dr. Yvonne Langan joined the team as<br />
Consultant Clinical Neurophysiologist in February 2009 and<br />
has since established an ambulatory EEG and a short video<br />
telemetry service. Dr. Aoife Laffan joined the department<br />
as research fellow in <strong>2010</strong> and is conducting research into<br />
baorefl ex sensitivity in those with epilepsy and its role in<br />
sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. This work is sponsored<br />
by Brainwave.<br />
Neurology<br />
The epilepsy service continues to provide a widely recognised<br />
innovated service for epilepsy patients, encompassing new<br />
technology such as health link. Dr. Doherty was appointed<br />
the National Clinical lead for Epilepsy within the Directorate of<br />
Clinical <strong>St</strong>rategy & Programmes, HSE. <strong>St</strong>. James’s <strong>Hospital</strong><br />
will be the regional epilepsy centre for the Dublin Min-Leinster<br />
region. It is planned that a team of fi ve clinicians will deliver<br />
care throughout this region as part of the National Epilepsy<br />
care programme.<br />
The Neurology Department continues with its ongoing<br />
research in Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis, bone disease<br />
and immunomodulators including: Bone disease follow<br />
up in MS and a case controlled study of bone density in<br />
Parkinson’s disease.<br />
