with 92% proceeding to a prostate biopsy. The urology Multi-<br />
Disciplinary Team meeting takes place weekly where complex<br />
cancer patients can be discussed to have a collaborated<br />
structured treatment plan implemented.<br />
The number of patients attending general urology outpatients<br />
has also dramatically increased by 22.8% over the last<br />
year to a total of 5539 patients seen last year. All patients<br />
receive information leafl ets on planned procedures prior to<br />
discharge from clinic and newly diagnosed cancer patients<br />
have the opportunity to meet one of our urology clinical nurse<br />
specialists. The urology nurses provide a unique service to the<br />
urology department ranging from investigative and therapeutic<br />
procedures, patient education both pre- and post operatively<br />
and patient support.<br />
The department is extensively involved in both clinical and<br />
science based research and there are 2 full time clinical<br />
urology research fellows. The science research is focused<br />
on prostate cancer and based in the Trinity centre under the<br />
Supervision of Professor Thomas Lynch and Professor Donal<br />
Hollywood (Radiation Oncology). Papers have been submitted<br />
to both national and International meetings including the<br />
Irish Society of Urology, European Association of Urology,<br />
American Association of Urology and the Irish Association of<br />
Urology Nurses.<br />
