Clinical Directorates I Omega<br />

The total outpatient attendance rate for the Omega Directorate<br />

increased in <strong>2010</strong> with an increase in new and return patients.<br />

During <strong>2010</strong> the directorate reviewed patient processing, clinic<br />

schedules, and implemented revised referral criteria to reduce<br />

the waiting times for patients attending each speciality<br />

• The Consultants and staff of the Omega Directorate would<br />

like to acknowledge the contribution made to Orthopaedic<br />

Surgery and the National Centre for Hereditary Coagulation<br />

Disorders (NCHCD) by Mr. Hugh Smyth and wish him a<br />

happy retirement. Mr. Padraig O Ceallaigh has taken up his<br />

position as Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeon<br />

Maxillofacial Surgery<br />

The National Maxillofacial unit is a tertiary referral centre<br />

dealing with:<br />

• Facial trauma<br />

• Correction of congenital and acquired facial and<br />

jaw deformities<br />

• Oral cancer and reconstructive surgery<br />

• Salivary gland disease<br />

• Dentoalveolar and orofacial pathology<br />

• Congenital abnormalities<br />

• Implantology<br />

Oral Maxillofacial Cancer<br />

Patients are referred from dentists, GP’s and the Dublin Dental<br />

<strong>Hospital</strong> for investigation, treatment and surgery for oral<br />

maxillofacial cancer. A multidisciplinary team comprising of<br />

Consultant Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon, Cancer Co-Ordinator,<br />

Nursing staff, Clinical Nutritionist and Speech and Language<br />

therapist provide treatment and care for patients.<br />

Cleft Orthodontic Unit<br />

The cleft Orthodontic Unit is a tertiary referral service for<br />

orthodontic management of children and adults born with cleft<br />

lip and palate and craniofacial anomalies.<br />

Regular multi-disciplinary cleft clinics are held in <strong>St</strong>. James’s<br />

<strong>Hospital</strong>, Temple <strong>St</strong>reet Children’s University <strong>Hospital</strong><br />

and Our Lady’s <strong>Hospital</strong> for sick Children as part of the<br />

wider Dublin Cleft Centre. Joint clinics are also held with<br />

colleagues in, Plastic Surgery, Maxillofacial Surgery and<br />

Restorative dentistry.<br />

The Cleft Co-Ordinator maintains the cleft database and<br />

co-ordinates the patient’s individual care pathway.<br />

Prosthodontic Unit<br />

The Prosthodontic Unit acts as a tertiary referral centre<br />

primarily for the Prosthodontic management of patients with<br />

cleft lip and palate needs and includes a limited service for<br />

the prosthetic intraoral rehabilitation of head and neck cancer<br />

patients from <strong>St</strong>. James’s <strong>Hospital</strong> and Our Lady’s <strong>Hospital</strong> for<br />

Sick Children, Crumlin.<br />

Out Patient Procedures<br />

The Maxillofacial/Orthodontic and Prosthodontic Unit provides<br />

an outpatient procedure and treatment service for patients<br />

requiring a wide range of procedures including:<br />

• Dentoaveolar surgery<br />

• Biopsy of oral and cavity, lip and skin lesions<br />

• Bracket application and removal<br />

• Plate, screw and islet wire application/removal<br />

• Impressions/study models<br />

• Arch wire/bands/brackets<br />

• Veneers/crowns<br />

• Implants<br />

• Tooth extraction<br />
