Clinical Directorates I Omega<br />
Minor Operations<br />
Minor operations are performed in the out patients<br />
department and include the following:<br />
• Biopsies<br />
• Wound debridement<br />
• Suturing<br />
• Minor hand surgery<br />
National Burns Unit<br />
The unit continues to provide optimal care for burn-injured<br />
patients and utilises the skills of a multidisciplinary team from<br />
the acute to the rehabilitative phase of burn injury. There was<br />
an increase in the number of patients admitted to the burns<br />
unit. 137 patients were admitted with 19 patients placed on<br />
a ventilator.<br />
There were 374 Minor Operations performed in Plastic<br />
Surgery outpatients in <strong>2010</strong><br />
Developments in <strong>2010</strong><br />
• Establishment of a regular Hand Clinic<br />
• <strong>St</strong>. James’s <strong>Hospital</strong> Cleft Team have taken responsibility<br />
for the Cleft service in University <strong>Hospital</strong> Galway and travel<br />
to Galway to assess patients in multidisciplinary out patient<br />
clinics. Surgery for these patients is provided in <strong>St</strong>. James’s<br />
<strong>Hospital</strong> and Our Lady’s <strong>Hospital</strong>, Crumlin<br />
• Publications and research into areas including cleft, burns<br />
and hand injury<br />
Plastic Surgery – Main Theatre<br />

The multidisciplinary team is dedicated to improving the<br />
quality of care delivered to patients and promotes the best<br />
management of burn injured patients by educating nursing<br />
staff in other acute hospitals. Nursing staff have also expanded<br />
their role to provide care for patients requiring dialysis.<br />
The multidisciplinary team in conjunction with the patient<br />
and the family aim to preserve life and with equal importance<br />
promote quality of life by maximising long-term physical,<br />
vocational and psychosocial functioning.<br />
The Consultants and staff of the Omega Directorate would like<br />
to acknowledge the contribution made to the National Burns<br />
Unit by Ms. Christine Kelly and wish her a happy retirement.<br />

Micro pigmentation service<br />
Development of a nurse led micro pigmentation service<br />
providing patients with the opportunity to treat problematic<br />
scars and provide an areolar tattoo service for patients<br />
following breast reconstruction. 35 patients were treated<br />
during <strong>2010</strong>.<br />
