Introduction<br />
The Laboratory Medicine (LabMed) Directorate comprises<br />
the clinical laboratory departments of Biochemistry (including<br />
Point of Care Testing), Cancer Molecular Diagnostics,<br />
Haematology (incorporating Coagulation and Cryobiology),<br />
Histopathology (incorporating Cytopathology), Immunology,<br />
the Irish Mycobacteria Reference Laboratory (IMRL),<br />
Microbiology (incorporating Virology and Infection Control<br />
and Prevention), the National MRSA Reference Laboratory<br />
(NMRSARL), Phlebotomy and Transfusion Medicine<br />
(incorporating Haemovigilance).<br />
The LabMed Directorate is responsible for the overall<br />
management and development of the Clinical Pathology<br />
Laboratory Services in support of <strong>St</strong>. James’s <strong>Hospital</strong>,<br />
General Practitioners (GPs), other hospitals and external<br />
agencies throughout the country. The laboratory also acts<br />
as a reference laboratory, nationally, for many specialties in<br />
laboratory medicine.<br />
Accreditation/License<br />
All laboratory medicine disciplines, as outlined below, are<br />
accredited. The following are accredited to Clinical Pathology<br />
Accreditation (CPA) standards (incorporating ISO 15189) and<br />
have retained their accreditation status in <strong>2010</strong>:<br />
• Biochemistry (including POCT and Phlebotomy)<br />
• Cancer Molecular Diagnostics<br />
