In-patient Services<br />

<strong>St</strong>. John’s Ward, Victor Synge Ward and <strong>Hospital</strong> 5 Unit 3<br />

provide in-patient care. The ‘red apron’ project, as part of<br />

the organisational safe medication administration programme<br />

was successfully rolled out across the Directorate. <strong>St</strong>. John’s<br />

Ward is the SJH surgical clinical lead for HfH (Hospice Friendly<br />

<strong>Hospital</strong>) initiative, which promotes standards of excellence in<br />

end of life care.<br />

Victor Synge was facilitated by the Clinical Support Nurse in<br />

the development of clinical competencies for the management<br />

of Dermatology, Endocrinology and Rheumatology patients.<br />

Day Ward Services<br />

The SaMS Directorate provides day ward services (medical<br />

and surgical) across eight specialties.<br />

Discharge Lounge<br />

The Discharge Lounge supports the provision of a timely<br />

discharge facility, thereby ensuring an expedient admission<br />

process for the clinical areas. 30% of appropriate discharges<br />

utilised the Discharge Lounge.<br />

Dermatology<br />

Professor L. Barnes was appointed Dermatology Clinical lead<br />

to the Directorate of Quality and Clinical Care, HSE.<br />

The Dermatology Department continues to provide an<br />

excellent service across a range of services, including Mohs<br />

Micrographic Surgery (MMS), which is led by Dr. P Ormond.<br />

In <strong>2010</strong>, 2197 patients attended Dr. Ormond of which 118<br />

were MMS.<br />

The EB team, led by Dr. R Watson, continues to provide<br />

dedicated individualized care to adult patients with<br />

Epidermolysis Bullosa.<br />

The diabetic service continued to expand and provide highly<br />

specialised care for a growing cohort of patients. The service<br />

continues to provide specialised and tertiary services in<br />

areas such as insulin pump therapy and retinal screening.<br />

Dr. Siobhán McQuaid was replaced by Dr. Mansud Hatunic<br />

as Locum Endocrinologist in August as Professor Nolan<br />

continued his research programme. Professor Nolan resigned<br />
