Paramedic - Advanced Life Support,<br />
Associate in Applied Science (EMTP)<br />
The Associate in Applied Science Degree: Paramedic - Advanced Life Support<br />
program is designed for individuals who are seeking careers as paramedics<br />
and/or careers that are related to medical emergencies. The primary focus of<br />
the program is to provide an educational vehicle and skill set for emerging<br />
paramedic professionals. The technical core of the program focuses on the<br />
knowledge and skills required to effectively manage and mitigate emergency<br />
medical disasters. The competencies and course content have been developed<br />
with significant consideration of the coursework developed by the Emergency<br />
Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-P) National Standard Curriculum. The<br />
<strong>Delaware</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> is an accredited Emergency Medical<br />
Services Training Institute with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Bureau<br />
of EMS.<br />
An Associate of Applied Science will be awarded upon completion of the<br />
Paramedic-Advanced Life Support curriculum with a 2.0 GPA and a “C” or<br />
better in all Emergency Medical Services (EMS) courses and BIO 150 and BIO<br />
151. Students in this degree program must maintain a “C” or better in the<br />
EMS courses and BIO 150 and BIO 151 to remain in the program and must<br />
progress through the curriculum in sequence. Upon successful completion of<br />
the 40 credits of EMS core classes and 8 credits of Anatomy and Physiology,<br />
students are eligible to sit for the National Registry exam to become certified<br />
as a Paramedic.<br />
Students may be dismissed from the program for violation of patient safety,<br />
confidentiality or behavior incompatible with acceptable standards pending<br />
outcome of the appeal process.<br />
By completion of the second semester, students are required to:<br />
• Submit a Criminal Background check<br />
• Submit a clear Child Abuse background check<br />
• Take a medical physical and drug testing<br />
• Submit verification of current medical health insurance, which must be<br />
maintained throughout the program. Information about health insurance<br />
plans for students is available in the Health Center at Marple Campus.<br />
• Be 18 years of age or older<br />
• Be currently certified as a Pennsylvania Emergency Medical Technician-<br />
Basic or have a reciprocity application in process for PA EMT-B<br />
The above documentation must be submitted to the <strong>Delaware</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Community</strong><br />
<strong>College</strong> Director of Public Safety who advises individuals in this program.<br />
Upon successful completion of this program, the student should be able to:<br />
• Demonstrate communication skills.<br />
• Record documentation accurately.<br />
• Perform pharmacology mathematical skills.<br />
• Demonstrate the ability to comprehend, apply, and evaluate<br />
clinical information.<br />
• Demonstrate technical proficiency in all skills necessary to fulfill the role of<br />
a paramedic.<br />
• Demonstrate personal behaviors consistent with professional and<br />
employer expectations.<br />
• Demonstrate proficiency in EKG interpretation, medication administration,<br />
intubation procedures and intravenous initiation.<br />
• Demonstrate entry level competencies in all clinical situations.<br />
• Discuss and demonstrate the ability to differentiate the severity of illness.<br />

Respiratory Therapy, Associate in Applied<br />
Science (RESP)<br />
The Respiratory Therapy curriculum prepares allied health specialists for the<br />
management, treatment, testing and care of patients with breathing abnormalities.<br />
All Respiratory Therapy applicants are required to submit a "Criminal History<br />
Record Information Report" and be free of any conviction of elder or child<br />
abuse for 10 years prior to beginning the first clinical course. Admitted<br />
students must pass a drug test prior to beginning the program. This service<br />
will be provided at a special college planning for advisement and registration<br />
for clinical.<br />
All Respiratory Therapy students will need to have on file in the Health Center<br />
the results of a complete physical examination including: laboratory tests, a<br />
complete blood count, serology and TB testing. Additionally, these students<br />
must have medical health insurance and be in compliance with recommendations<br />
for the Hepatitis B vaccine. Certain manual dexterity and sensory skills are<br />
necessary for successful completion of the Respiratory Therapy program.
