The Child Development Associate, Certificate<br />

of Competency (ECA)<br />

This Certificate of Competency from <strong>Delaware</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> will<br />

prepare students for entry level positions in early care and education programs.<br />

It will enable students to apply for The Child Development Associate Credential<br />

(CDA ) which is awarded by The Council for Professional Recognition. This<br />

program is composed of three 3 credit courses and one 1 credit course that<br />

meets the educational requirement and competencies for the CDA.<br />

Upon successful completion of this program, students should be able to:<br />

• Develop strategies for fostering children's cognitive, physical, social,<br />

emotional and language development.<br />

• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the importance of working<br />

with parents as partners.<br />

• Select and apply age and developmentally appropriate materials,<br />

equipment and activities for curricula designed to meet the needs of typical,<br />

and atypical young child.<br />

• Manifest a responsible and professional attitude toward career goals.<br />

The Early Childhood Director, Certificate of<br />

Competency (ECD)<br />

The Early Childhood Director Certificate of Competency from <strong>Delaware</strong> <strong>County</strong><br />

<strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> will prepare students for administrative and leadership<br />

positions in early care and education programs. Coursework will cover<br />

strategies for program administration, understanding of financial management<br />

and current issues facing early care and education programs. This certificate of<br />

competency also meets the educational requirements for Pennsylvania's<br />

Director Credential that is awarded by the Pennsylvania Early Learning Keys to<br />

Quality. Students seeking this certificate must have an AAS or AS in ECE or<br />

related field or higher OR have completed 45 hours towards an AAS degree in<br />

Early Childhood Education.<br />

Upon successful completion of this program, the student should be able to:<br />

• Develop leadership skills to enhance the student's ability to effectively<br />

manage an early childhood program.<br />

• Utilize governmental regulations and best practice guidelines to improve<br />

the quality of early care and education services.<br />

• Evaluate current administrative strategies and develop more effective<br />

management skills.<br />

• Identify and implement sound and proven business and financial<br />

management strategies.<br />

• Identify current trends in early care and education and develop strategies<br />

for effectively implementing program policy to address these trends.<br />

• Evaluate current practices in supervision of teaching staff and develop<br />

strategies to enhance the staff's skill in providing high quality early care<br />

Theatre Arts, Certificate of Competency (THEC)<br />

The Certificate of Competency in Theatre Arts is designed for students who<br />

wish to have sufficient theatre training to be able to pursue a career in the<br />

theatre, or who wish to apply for certain graduate level theatre training programs<br />

which accept students without a B.A. All Theatre Arts courses are transferable<br />

for those students who wish to pursue a B.A. in Theatre or Communication<br />

Arts. In the Theatre Arts Certificate of Competency program, students are given<br />

a strong background in a broad range of theatre skills, including acting, set<br />

construction and design, lighting design, costume and make-up design, and<br />

theatre history. Students may then choose from elective courses in Theatre<br />

Arts to complete the requirements for the Certificate of Competency.<br />

Upon completion of the Theatre Arts Certificate program, students should be<br />

able to:<br />

• Demonstrate knowledge of the global history of Theatre, its major genres<br />

and trends, and most influential practitioners.<br />

• Analyze and critique plays and scripts.<br />

• Demonstrate a working knowledge of the basic theories and techniques<br />

of acting.<br />

• Demonstrate a working knowledge of set, lighting, costume, and<br />

make-up design.<br />

• Demonstrate a working knowledge of tool usage and safety.<br />

• Demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively within a group of diverse<br />

talents and skills to bring a play or script to performance.<br />
