Different Values<br />

<strong>Conflict</strong>s involving different values (beliefs, priorities,<br />

principles) tend to be more difficult to resolve.<br />

When an individual holds a value, he or she has an<br />

enduring belief that a specific action or quality is<br />

preferable to another action or quality. Many times<br />

disputants think in terms of “right/wrong” or “good/<br />

bad” when values are in opposition. Even conflicts<br />

over differing goals can be viewed as value conflicts.<br />

The source of a goal conflict relates either to the<br />

goal’s relative importance for each disputant or to<br />

the fact that the disputants value different goals.<br />

Resolving a values conflict does not mean the<br />

disputants must change or agree on their values.<br />

Often a mutual acknowledgment that each person<br />

views the situation differently is the first step
