altogether. Prince Eugene gained a most glorious victory over the<br />

Turks—killed 2,000 men, all or most Janizaries. <strong>The</strong>y behaved 'em<br />

selves with wonderfull bravery at first ;—Belgrade^^ soon after surrendered<br />

ujDon the same terms that Temeswaer had done before.<br />

1717. Sept 9th. <strong>The</strong> great wind last year, about this time twelve<br />

months, blew directly down the river Thames, kept back the tide, and<br />

made the river almost dry, only for some little rundlets here and<br />

there ; Mr. Challoner saw it. Parson of Morpeth's sister in law<br />

maintained by him and her husband, she used to sell his drink to a<br />

neighbouring ale-house—advised him to try their liquor—came from<br />

Sunderland—he said it had the tast of his own,—and so he after<br />

found it, etc. Morpeth School worth 5007. per annum—they bind<br />

every master under a bond of 5007. that they shall demand no more<br />

than they bargain for, so that they keep great part of that endowment<br />

to themselves. ^^<br />

1717. Sept. 10th. One Salkeld teaches in the Moot Hall in Morpeth—he<br />

should have been second master, but Mather^" gott it by<br />

Mandamus—the case to [be] tryed in Chancery. Went to Rye-hill<br />

Mr. Collingwood lives pleasantly—very good ground in that parish ;<br />

uncle gott Mr. Nicholson^^ that living of Dean and Chapter of Carlisle—Dr.<br />

Tod would had his brother. Uncle promised half of his<br />

living if I married ' any out. of such an honest family as yours '—to<br />

Mr. Collingwood.^^ <strong>The</strong>y commending my sermon, said the 5007.<br />

which was spent in my education was well bestowed, uncle said<br />

yes, so we all think '—Mr. Collingwood said if he was in uncle's<br />

place he would have given me 507. for that sermon he heard, it<br />

deserved it—uncle replyed, come, you'll not advance 5007. with your<br />

daughter, nor 507. neither.'<br />

1717. Sejjt. 11th. Breast sore ever since Sunday, not much better<br />

than it was then. Dr. Kennett^^^ in his funeral sermon upon the<br />

Duke of Devonshire says he did not repent till about two or three<br />

days before he dyed, but he was a man of such parts that he might<br />

do more in three days than some others in three years, his repentance<br />

" Belgrade after a month's siege by the Austrian troops under the command<br />

of Prince Eugene of Savoy, one of the most distinguished generals of his age,<br />

was taken from the Turks on the 16th of August, 1717.<br />

Mr. Mather was the under-master, or usher, of Morpeth Grammar School<br />

and, with the head-master, Mr. Lancelot Meggison, filed a bill in Chancery in<br />

1712, against the bailiffs and burgess^es of Morpeth and others, to recover part of<br />

the endowment of the school which, it was alleged, had been withheld, or misapplied.<br />

Mather did not get the head-mastership, to which there was appointed,<br />

26 May, 1718, Mr. Mordecai Carey of Trinity College, Cambridge, afterwards<br />
