or five days together, and as much expenc^ when he was abroad as<br />

when at home. Belgrade is naturally the strongest garrison in the<br />

world, chief mart for that part, Vienna merchants (some of 'em),<br />

1717. Sept. 12th. Scrivener's body of divinity but indifferent.<br />

Usher's^i not extraordinary, he writt it for his own use, never designed<br />

for the press—nor is it properly a body of divinity. Scrivener<br />

writt a book called Apologia pro Sanctis Patribus,^- against Monsieur<br />

Dallee—but uncle thinks he cannot be answered. But I think Reeve<br />

has done great things, etc.<br />

1717. Sept. 13th. Mr. Fletcher debauched several women in<br />

White-haven ; a lame gent, was told by some malicious woman that<br />

he had made an assignation with his wife and that they were then<br />

together—he went and found them, but it was accidental, he broke<br />

her and his head both—I believe with his crutch. But it is thought<br />

their meeting was accidental.<br />

1717. Sept. 14th. King of Spain entered upon Sardinia, and<br />

begun the war with the emperor—the pope is thought to be at the<br />

bottom of it—they desei-ved no mercy for disturbing the emperor<br />

when he is at war with the common enemy of Christendom.<br />

1717. Sept. 15th. Two men endeavoured to ravish a woman.<br />

Uncle took notice of it in his sennon, it had no less punishment assigned<br />

by our law than death, this startled the audience.<br />

1717. Sept. 16th. <strong>The</strong> storj- of Macbeth as is represented in the<br />

tragedy that goes by that name in Heylin's Cosmography^^—true in<br />

all its circumstances, etc. King James I., when in England, sent<br />

a letter to the earl of Huntley,^^ who had man-ied his niece, and after<br />

a long time had been allowed him to comply with the new-preachers,<br />

1717. Sept. 17th. One Dr. Bainbridge^^ went from Cambridge<br />

to Oxon to be astronomy professor, and reading a lecture happened<br />

to say cle Pol is et Axis, instead of Arihus. Upon which one said,<br />

John Bainbridge, M.D., of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, Savilian Professor<br />

of Astronomy (1619-1643) in Oxford, died 3 Nov., 1643, and was buried<br />

in Mtrton College chapel.
