Workmen would fain be gone, take umbrage at ever}- thing, and<br />

1718. April 29th. Uncle told 'em yesterday lie had freinds in<br />

Ireland might have made him a bisliop. Sir Robert Staples' lady^oi<br />

neice to my aunt—I think they lived there, she a bishop's daughter.<br />

Colonel Gledhall's-"- being in tlie Fleet a pretence given out by him-<br />

"• Henrj- Oxburgh, a cadet of the familj- of O.Kburgh of Bovin, King's<br />

County, after serving in the French army returned to England and acquired<br />

some propertj' in Lancashire circa 1696. He came out in the '15 and accepted<br />

from Tom Forster a commission as colonel in the rebel armj'. He surrendered<br />

at Preston, was tried for high treason, and was executed at Tyburn on tlie 14th<br />

May, 1716.<br />

Penrice, writing circd 1747, says : 'As to matters of conduct, Mr. Forster,<br />

tho' he was call'd general, yet he always submitted to the counsel of Colonel<br />

Oxburgh, who was formerly a soldier, and had obtained a great reputation ;<br />

tho' it is manifest in our case that he either wanted conduct or courage, or<br />

perlmps both. He was better at his beads and prayers tiian at his business as<br />

a soldier, and we all thought him fitter for a priest than a field-otiicer. It must<br />

be own'd tliat he was very devout in his religion, and that is all the good we<br />

can say of liim ; and that devotion he has since iiad great occasion for in another<br />
