1787. Oct. After seven weeks sitting, the court marsliall against<br />

Major Browne closed, but no sentence passed.<br />

1787. Oct. 7. Pearson, clerk, i'. Ilderton, esq. After three weeks<br />

sitting, the commission closed respecting the glebe land at Ilderton,<br />

and sealed up.^**<br />

1787. Oct. 9. Married at Alnwick, Mr. Robert Richardson,<br />

attorney, to a daughter of James Purvis, common brewer.^^<br />

1787. Oct. Died lately in France, Ralph Clavering, esq., formerly<br />

of Callaley, Northumberland, ^o<br />

1787. Oct. Major Browne of the 67th regiment found guilty of<br />

oppres.sion by the court martial: to be suspended. ^i<br />

1787. Oct. 21. Dutches of Northumberland arrived at Heatonhall<br />

with two children to have inoculated.<br />

1787. Oct. Foxton-hall farm let to Mr. William Anderson of<br />

Bilton for the remainder of years of Mr. Selby's lease.<br />

Alnwick Castle.<br />

Baron. Hardy, Sanderson.<br />

1787. Oct. 27. Captain Potts^ begun to recruit at Alnwick for<br />

the 51st regiment.<br />

1787. Oct. 29. At noon, arrived at Alnwick Castle, His Grace<br />

Duke of Northumberland, with a great concourse of people : an ox<br />

roasted whole and illuminations, etc.<br />

1787. Nov. Died, the 20th of last month, Mrs. Smart, relict of<br />

the late William Smart, esq., at Broxfield.^<br />

Also at Alnwick, Mr. Robert Nicholson, merchant, and his wife.<br />

Died at the same place. Miss Nanny Woodhouse, daughter of Mr.<br />

Thomas Woodhouse.<br />

Last month also. His Grace Duke of Rutland, Lord Lieutenant<br />

and Viceroy of Ireland, aged 33 ; the first that ever died in that<br />

honourable post.<br />

Also died, Mr. John Forster of Benvick, brother to Matthew<br />

Forster of Bolton, esq.^<br />

This refers to an action l)rouglit by the incumbent of Ilderton against the<br />

landowners to ascertain and delimit the glebe land, which up to that time seems<br />

to have been scattered and undivided from the property of the lay freeholders.<br />

' Mr. Ralph Clavering of Callaley, the head of that very ancient house,<br />

and representative of the ancient barons of Warkworth, was born on tiie 29<br />

June, 1727, being eldest 'ion of Ralph Clavering of Callaley by his marriage<br />

witli Mary, daughter of Nicholas Stapleton of Ponteland. He died at St. Omer<br />

on the 4 October, 1787 {\eiiriist/f' Coiirnnt, 20 October, 17S7), having been<br />

married tliree times and leaving issue by his second and third wives.<br />
