1774. Sept. 30. Died at York, aged 72, greatly lamented by<br />

all his acquainta.nct\ my worthy friend and fellow collegian at Trinity<br />

Hall, William Stables, esq.,-^^ commissary of the Dean and Chapter<br />

Court of York, one of the city councillors and recorder of Richmond.<br />

He was many years surrogate of the cliancellor of York, which he<br />

resigned in 177-4.<br />

1774. Nov. 12. Died at Middleton, Leonard Hartley, esq., in<br />

the 86th year of his age ; about 7 in the evening.<br />

1775. Feb. 4. Mrs. Shaftoe of Whitworth brought to bed of a<br />

son and heir. <strong>The</strong> bells at the Abbey rung on the 5th, in the<br />

morning. -^*^<br />

1775. Feb. 8. Tlie wife of Mr. Liddle of Newton, 24^ brought<br />

to bed of a son. Mr. Liddle run his wife against Mrs. Shaftoe,<br />

i.e., he laid a wager of twenty-five guineas with Sir John Eden,<br />

that Mrs. Liddle was brought to bed before Mrs. Shaftoe, which he<br />

lost.<br />

1775. March 17. Died, Ralph Harrison, attorney-at-law, suddenly,<br />

whilst riding to taJie the air near Stonebridge. 2^8<br />

1775. July 14. Rev. Ra. Gelson, vicar of Merrington and a<br />

minor canon, became sui vindex by help of a penny cord.249<br />

In this month Mark Mill^anke, esq., of Thoi-]) in Y'orkshire,<br />

fell from a hay-rick and died veiy soon after.-^o<br />

1775. Oct. 8. Died at his house in Durham, Robert Spearman, 251<br />

esq., owner of Thoniley, aged alx)ut 24 ; a young man of good parts<br />

but irreligious.<br />

1775. Oct. 25. Died at Ellingham in Northumberland, my<br />

friend the Rev. Thomas Randal, -^^ vicar of that place. He was<br />

Last Sunday the wife of Robert Shafto of Whitworth, escj., was safely<br />

delivered of a son and heir, on which joyful occasion the bells in Durham were<br />

set on ringing. Nevcastle Couranf, 11th February, 1775.<br />

Lincoln College, O.xford, matriculated 24th March, 1736 7, B.A. 1740, perpetual<br />

curate of St. Giles', Durham, 1768, and the same year vicar of Kirk Merrington.<br />

" By his will dated 23rd July, 1775, Mr. Mark Milbank of Tliorp Perrow<br />

gave his estate to his three sisters", Mary, Jane and Elizabeth, all of whom died<br />

unmarried. Miss Jane Milbank, the last survivor of tlie three, by will dated<br />

20tli June, 1791, gave her real and other estate to William Melville, who was<br />

to take the name of Milbank.<br />
