1686, July 29, I went that day to the assizes at Durham with Sir<br />

William Bowes^^ in his ccnicli. And I went Saturday tlie last of July<br />

to Newcastle, and stayed till Monday ; dined at Justice Carr's and<br />

Ciinie and layed at Streateham castle all night, and got home the<br />

next day.<br />

Jan. 13, 1686/7, being Thursday, my sonne William was marryed<br />

at Galthropp haips \vith cosen John Tempest's daughter. Mis. Dorithy,<br />

and came to me at Barnard Castle the 0th of Febniary following.<br />

May the 2nd, 1687, my grandchild, Christopher Sandei'son,24 sett<br />

forwards for Oxford betwixt 9 and 10 in the morning. His father<br />

went along with him, and for a servant Pinkeney junir>r, and returned<br />

the 14th of June.<br />

July 27, 1687. Sir Richard Shuttleworth died at Gawthtrp in<br />

the smale-pox on Wednesday moraing.^s<br />

' Gawthorp in Whalley was the seat of Sir Richard Shuttleworth, whose<br />

wife was also a dau^'hter of John Tempest of Old Durham.<br />

After his first wife's death, William Sanderson married Elizabeth, daughter<br />

of William Howard of Corbj^ but had no issue by either marriage. About the<br />

year 1712, he purchased Armathwaite Castle in Cumberland, and at his death<br />

was seised of property at Whorlton, Aldborough, etc. His will, dated 3rd<br />

July, 1726, with a codicil added 14th May, 1727, was proved at York on the<br />

1st March, 1728 9. After making provision for his wife and others, he gives<br />

his real estate at Armathwaite in Cumberland, Aldborough, Yorks, the manor of<br />

Whorlton and lands of Whorley-hill near Barnard Castle, to his brother Robert<br />

with successive remainders over to his nephews Milburn. He gives the residue<br />

to Dame (Catherine Shuttleworth in token of grateful remembrance and affection.<br />

Lady Catherine Shuttleworth made her will on the 19th Aug., 1727, and<br />

gave all her personal estate in trust for Mathias Milbm-n of Armathwaite, gent.,<br />

and William Milburn, son of Thomas Milburn deceased. <strong>The</strong> will was proved<br />

at York, 1st March, 1728,9.<br />

Christopher Sanderson, son of Cuthbert Sanderson of Eggleston. esq., of<br />

Queen's College, Oxford, matriculated 12th May, 1687, aged 15. Foster, Alumni<br />

Oxoniensts.<br />

Cuthbert Sanderson of Eggleston, died 1st April, 1690, and on the 10th of<br />

the same month an inventory of his personal estate was taken, amounting to<br />

£114 r2s. 4d., chiefly of farming stock ; and administration of his goods was<br />

Granted at Durham in Ma\- of the same year to Frances Sanderson, the widow,<br />

he was buried in the chancel of the old chapel of pjggleston, near the communion<br />

table, and the following epitaph can still be read.<br />

brother-indaw of the Diarist's son William.<br />

U'hitaker, HiMory of Whallrij. p. 340, notes a popular story which had<br />

lingered to his time, apparently of Sir Richard Shuttloworth's father, that the<br />
