falling sick in running. Ho won seven or eight thousand pounds in<br />

betts. <strong>The</strong> famous jockey, Tom Jackson, rode along witli him.<br />

<strong>Other</strong>s report that he won 10 or 11 thousand pounds.<br />

1759. About the middle of August, George Spearman^'^'* of<br />

Bishop Middleham, esq., was married in Scotland to Miss Webb of<br />

London upon the strength of a week's acquaintance. She was about<br />

eighteen or nineteen, and he about five or six and forty.<br />

1759. Nov. 20. Died at her house in New Elvet, Mrs. Betty<br />

Bowes, 1^^ eldest sister of George Bowes, esq., of the gout in her<br />

stomach, and was buried the 2.'}rd in St. Mary's, South Bailev.<br />

17(')0. Feb. 9. Mr. Robert Althorp died at Richmond. He left<br />

his estates to his uncles tho' he had often promised to leave his cousin,<br />

George Hartley, that part of his estate, which was his mother's,<br />

aunt to Mr. Hartley.<br />

1760. May 8. Died at Morton-house, at an advanced age, Mr.<br />

Robert Smith, distinguished bv the name of Count Smith. ^^^<br />

the week preceding died the Rev. Mr. George Marsh, i^" rector of Ford<br />

in Northumberland, formerlv curate of Middleton Tvas, a native of<br />

1760. Sejit. 17. Died at Gibside, of a lingering illness, George<br />

Bowes, esq., in the 60th year of his age. He was the last heir<br />

male of the Streatlam family, leaving an only daughter, Eleanor, born<br />

24 Febniaiy. 1748/9. Buried at Whickham ; the body to be after-<br />

Last week was married George Spearman of Bishop Middleham, esq., to<br />

Miss Webb, sister of — Webb of Durham, esq. ; a young lady of great beauty,<br />

merit and accomplishments, with a considerable fortune. Xeircaslle Couranty<br />
