1796. Sept. 28, 29, 30. A Highland regiment of foot passed<br />

through Ahiwick for Scotland. Also the Antient Welch regiment of<br />

cavalry to the same <strong>country</strong>.<br />

Likewise an Irish regiment of foot passed through Alnwick for the<br />

south : bad men and very indifferent characters.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Middlesex militia, now quartered at Alnwick, about 400.<br />

A remarkable good harvest, all grain Avell gathered in.<br />

1796. Oct. 2. Died at Unthank House, near Ryle, George Collingwood,<br />

esq., the last male issue of the family of the Collingfwoods.^<br />

1796. Oct. <strong>The</strong> Austrians still successful and pursuing the<br />

French ; about 20,000 of them killed and taken prisoners wath a<br />

general of note.<br />

Great success in Italy, insomuch that the French will be surrounded<br />

hj General Wurmster.<br />

1796. Oct. 20. Died at Alnwick, Mrs. Ogle, widow of the late Mr.<br />

James Ogle, hatter in Rothbury.'*<br />

1796. Oct. Died at Hampton, Gloucestershire, Mrs. Ogle, relict<br />

of Colonel Ogle, late of Cawsey Park, in Northumberland.^<br />

1796. Nov. 1. Died at Cumberland, at the seat of Humphrey<br />

Senhouse, esq., Mrs. Wood, relict and widow of Thomas Wood, late<br />

of Beadnell, esq., aged 87.<br />

1796. Nov. Lord Malmsbury over at Paris on a treaty for peace,<br />

but very little probability : the French being exhorbitant in their<br />

demands.<br />

1796. Nov 2-4. Died at Chirton—Mr. C'ollingwood's seat—Mrs.<br />

Elizabeth Eoddam, sister to Admiral R. Roddam, aged 87.'''<br />

1796. Nov. 28. Duke and Dutches of Northumberland, with all<br />

their retinue, set of from AluAvick Castle for London.<br />

1796. Nov. Mr. Thos. Aitkin of Alemouth, corn factor and<br />

timber-merchant, failed, in considerable debt, to the great loss of the<br />

farmers ; Mr. Lambert, attorney, much blamed.<br />

^ Mr. George ColUngwood, the fifth son of Alexander ColUngwood of Little<br />

Ryle and Unthank by his wife Eleanor, daughter of Robert Blake, was born on<br />

the 26th October, 1729. He was descended from Thomas Collingwood of Little<br />

Ryle, who entered his pedigree at St. George's visitation of Northumberland in<br />

1615. He died unmarried.<br />

^ Probably Mary Parker, wife of James Ogle of Rothbury, who was baptized<br />

there on the 7th June, 1709, a son of Edward Ogle by his wife Sarah Fenwick.<br />
