in his new house. Dr. Kennet-i^ went to A'isit bishop of London, he<br />

desired him to stay dinner—the bishop of Carlisle was to come<br />

Kennett declined and made some excuse to be gone, but w^hile they<br />

were arguing, the bishop of Carlisle's coach was heard, he went down<br />

to wait upon him and left Kennett, and Kennett slipt down another<br />

way. ^<br />

1718. May 26th. One Crow hanged himself in Sir Harry<br />

Lyddale's wood—he went by that name, but no body knew whence<br />

he came—when a warrant was issued out to apprehend him, and his<br />

person described—the next day he went and hanged himself—he was<br />

supposed to be the man that beheaded King Charles. All our pease,<br />

many of our plants and beans broken by the wind—the pease quite<br />

blown away—abominably pestered with snails.<br />

1718. May 27th. Robin and Christopher take no care of their<br />

sheep, etc., to keep tliem oiit of our closes, when uncle is away. My<br />

uncle desired the latter once to take care of his ground—and his<br />

beasts were in every night and taken out as soon as ever it was<br />

light—says Tbm. Uncle called of Mr. Hall to walk a little with him<br />

when he went to Robert Potts, as if it was to give him a charge to<br />

observe me, and the next day they hasted out of church together<br />

whereas Mr. Hall generally stays till I go out.<br />

1718. May 28th. Robert Potts left fourscore pound a peice to<br />

his three youngest sons—and all his sheep at Carlcroft to Thomas<br />

upon condition he pay 50/. to Harry—50/. to his daughter, and 10/.<br />

to that married to Jes. Hall—and to his wife the thirds of his real<br />

estate, 2 cows, 1 horse, and all the goods of the house to her own<br />

disposal. Thomas the only man vmsatisfied—^lie says it Avas not all<br />

his father's money they bought the stock with, he borrowed some, etc.<br />

1718. May 29th. This day twelvemonth kept Avith great<br />

solemnity2i7 at Cambridge. <strong>The</strong> day before—King George's birthday<br />

not observed. A wag, after two or three Yes's on the market<br />

place gave notice that the rejoycing of that day was to be putt of till<br />

to-morrow, etc.<br />

1718. May 30. In a letter from John Robinson, date Dec. 6th,<br />

1716—he says I must not imagine that he was one of the most uncharitable<br />

neighbours to that good natured lady (Mrs. Wilson) but<br />

probably otherwise. It is an old jDroverb, but pray putt no bad<br />

constructions on it—' That he that lives in or nigh the vineyard must<br />

sometimes taste of the gi-apes.'<br />

1718. May 31st. I remembred Mr. Fari'ington said he designed<br />
