1787. March 19. Died at Alnwick, Mrs. Daglish, wife of Thomas<br />

Daglish, gardener and innkee^oer.^<br />

1787. March. Memorandum : that William Charlton, esq., has<br />

acted as commissioner for His Grace the Duke' of Northumberland for<br />

eighteen years at this time.*<br />

1787. March 21. <strong>The</strong> seven year old Howick O'X was killed at<br />

Alnwick, amazingly fat, and weighed as follows :—the carcase 152 st.<br />

8 lbs., the tallow 16 st. = 168 st. 8 lbs. Bolton and Embleton, butchers,<br />

<strong>The</strong> head and feet of this ox were not weighed. It was sold at<br />

tenpence jDer pound, in pieces, and stakes of it at one shilling ; calculated<br />

to have sold, adding every article together, for the sum of<br />

100/. or thereabouts. Yery remarkable to be fed in Northumberland.<br />

It is to he remarked that in the month of December, 1779, an ox,<br />

fed at Blackwell, was killed in that month at Darlington, which<br />

weighed as follows: —the carcase iol st. 10 lbs., the tallow llst.=<br />

162 St. 10 lbs. He was six years old, and said to have been sold for<br />

109/. 11«. od., but not much credit given to either weight or sale,<br />

partioula,rly as the Howick ox exceeds in weight 5 st. 12 lbs. <strong>The</strong><br />

head and feet of the Blackwell ox was Aveighed, wliich makes a<br />

difference.<br />

1787. March. Died at Newcastle, John Rotherham, M.D., one of<br />

the physicians to the infirmary, aged 68.^<br />

1787. March 26. Died at Alnwick, Mr. Bryan Grey, attorney at<br />

law, wdth a very good charactei', aged 31.'^<br />

To the memory of Isabella, wife of Thomas Daglish of Alnwick, who<br />

departed this life March 10, 1787, aged 50 years.' Monumental Inscription,<br />

Mr. William Charlton of Lee-hall married at St. John's Church, Newcastle,<br />

10 Feb., 1752, Miss Esther Williams, by whom he had a numerous issue.<br />

He resided at Alnwick and died there on the 20 Sept., 1794, aged 75. Cf.<br />

He was succeeded as commissioner to the Duke of Northumberland by<br />

Henry Collingwood Selby. See p. 303, post.<br />

^ <strong>The</strong> NeiccastJe f'oiirant of 24 March, 1787, in announcing Dr. Rotheram's<br />

death on March 18, states that ' his house was a receptacle on certain days for<br />

the afflicted poor to whom he prescribed gratis with chearfulness, complacency<br />

and success. ' An admirable memoir may be found in Mr. Welford's Men of Mark<br />

'firixf Tyne and Ticeed. He was a native of Kendal, educated at the University<br />

of Edinburgh, and was afterwards physician to Newcastle Infirmary from 1771<br />

to 1786. He died aged 68 j'ears and was buried in Hexham church, leaving<br />

with other issue John Rotheram, M.D. , a professor of St. Andrews, and Edward<br />

" Mr. Bryan Grey, born at Craster and baptized at Embleton, Aug. 13,<br />

1756, was heir-apparent of his grandfather Bryan Grey of Kyloe, who died<br />

in July, 1792, being the eldest son of Marmaduke Grey (died 1763), by his<br />

marriage with Eleanor, daughter of Thomas Forster of Brunton. <strong>The</strong> following<br />

is an abstract of the grandfather's will :—<br />
