Miss Richardson, daugfhter of Doctor Richardson.<br />

1777. Jan. 3. Mr. William Cuthbert, attorney at law in Newcastle,<br />

married to Miss Hodgson.^<br />

1777. Jan. 11. Miss M. Brown from London on a visit to her<br />

friends.<br />

1777. Jan. 15. Mr. AVilliam Wilkin, an able mathematician in<br />

Alnwick, died, aged 21.-<br />

1777. Jan. 19. J. Percy Charlton, youngest son of William<br />

Charlton, esq., died, aged 5.^<br />

1777. Jan. 22. Mr. John Cook of Eastfield died. It's said his<br />

estate will go among his three sistei-s, all mai-ried.^<br />

1777. Jan. 31. William Ord, esq., of Fenham^ was appointed<br />

printed.<br />

date given in the text is incorrect, for the Xenxantle Courant of<br />

5 Oct., 1776, has amongst the marriage announcements, Wednesday, ' at<br />

St. Nicholas' Church, Mr. William Cuthbert, attorney-at-law, to the very<br />

amiable Miss Hodgson.' <strong>The</strong> bride was Anne, daughter of John Hodgson of<br />

Elswick, and of the marriage there was issue an only son also named William,<br />

who in lb35 purchased the ancient heritage of the Eriiugtons at leaufront,<br />

near Hexham.<br />

- Mr. William Wilkin was a schoolmaster in Alnwick who, as is stated in<br />

his epitaph in Alnwick churchj-ard, acquired a most extensive knowledge ' of<br />

mathematics. . . . but . . . ere liis genius had reached its meridian, . . . the<br />

small-pox, as if envious of his growing lustre, extinguished this lamp of science.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Xewca-'itle Courant of 18 Jan., 1777, says that he was self-taught.<br />

Percy Thomas Charlton, son of William Charlton of Lee-hall, in Tyndale,<br />

commissioner of the first Duke of Northumberland, died of small pox. Cf.<br />

Mr. John Cook, of Sturton Grange East-fiehl, was the eldest son of John<br />

Cook of tliat place, by his wife Deborah, daughter of Captain Henr\' Whitehead,<br />

of Boulmer. He was 8urvi\ed by his widow, who obtained in Feb., 1777,<br />

letters of administration of his personal estate, and also by his three sisters,<br />

Margaret, wife of John Cook, master and mariner ; Ann, wife of Thomas<br />

Storrer of Rothbury ; and Deborah, wife ot Edward Cook, sometime of Newham.<br />

* Mr. William Ord was eldest son of William Ord of Fcnham, ne:ir Newcastle,<br />

who purchased W hitfield in 1750. He died 6 July, 1789, leaving issue.<br />

His widow, Eleanor, daughter of Charles Brandling, married secondly Thomas<br />

Creevy, whose memoirs published in 1903, created considerable interest and<br />

raised some controversy.
