1763. May 28. Died in her house in South Bailey, Mrs.<br />

Middleton,^^*^ widow of my cousin, Ra. Middleton, vicar of Bos.sal, and<br />

brotlier to Francis Middleton, esq.^**^ Slie was daught.er of Sir<br />

George Wheler and aged 75 and upwards.<br />

176."}. June 20. About six of the clock in the evening, died of a<br />

fit of the palsey, Mr. James Hesletine, organist at the Abbey. He<br />

had a sallary of 100/. i)er annum. He wa.s appointed organist about<br />

the year 1711, then aged 19, and wa.s esteemed as an excellent artist<br />

on the organ. He married a daughter of Sir George \Vlieler but had<br />

no issue and died in ver^- plentifuU circumstances and intestate. i^°<br />

1763. Aug. 15. Died at Carlton, Wingate Pullein, esq.^^^<br />

1763. Oct. 11. About this time, a fellow from London, Dan<br />

Dowling, was apprehended as having tampered with a footman of<br />

Mrs. Bowes" and offering him 20,000/. to assist in carrying off Miss<br />

Bowes, in order to many her to a gentleman who had employed him<br />

for that purpose. Committed by Sir Thomas Clavering, as a rogue<br />

and vagabond, to the house of correction at Durham.<br />

John Ehden^^- appointed organist by the dean in the room of Mr.<br />

James Hesleton, but the chapter protested against the appointment,<br />

alledging their consent was necessary, and appealed to the bishop.<br />

1763. Dec. 4. Died at his father's house in Old Elvet, the Rev.<br />
