Richmond, died suddenly in his garden at in an advanced<br />

age, without issue. Succeeded in his estate by his brother, Thomas<br />

1757. Aug. 19. Tliis day about 11 in the forenoon died at<br />

Durham, in an advanced age, my old acquaintxince, Mr. John<br />

Hutton,i39 attorney-at-law. He was a. man of integrity and distinguished<br />

by his abiUtys in his profession ; and was buried ye 22nd<br />

in the chancel at Hougiiton-le-Spring at the foot of Mr. Davenport's<br />

grave<br />

1757. Sept. 28. Died at Belsay castle in Northumberland Sir<br />

"William Middleton,i4n ]:,n^_^ Knight of the Sliine for Northumberland,<br />

which county he had represented in Parliament since 1721. He left<br />

no issue by"^ his lady, Ann, tlie youngest of the two daughters of<br />

William Etrick, esq., of Silksworth in the comity of Durham. Sir<br />

William was succeeded in title and estate by his brother, John<br />

Laml)ert Middleton, esq., corn merchant in London, who had been<br />

unfortunate in trade.<br />

1757. Oct. 12. Died at Barford in Yorkshire, Mr. John Croft,<br />

one of the greatest breeders of horses in the <strong>north</strong>, as was his<br />

father, John Croft, who had been a servant, in the Darcy family at<br />

Sedbury and afterwards farmed at Croft under Sir William Chaytor.<br />

His wife was an admirer of the diversion of cock-iighting and would<br />

bet her money fi'eely.<br />

1757. Oct. 16. Died at Brancepeth Mr. Lancelot Hilton, i^i elder<br />

brother of David Hilton, esq., barrister-at-law, and was buried at<br />

Stockton.<br />

1757. Nov. 3. Died at his house at Mill-hill near Barnet in<br />

Middlesex, Hutton Perkins, ^^^ e,sq., formerly a sollicitor in Chancer}-,<br />

and many years principal secretary to Lord Hardwick when chancellor.<br />

Mr. Perkins was born at Barnard Castle.<br />

1757. Dec. 14. Widow Smith, daughter of Nicholas Shuttleworth.<br />

esq., went away with Captain Ferguson in a shamefull manner. ^^^<br />

in Parliament from 1710 to 1754. His wife was Anne, daughter and coheir<br />

<strong>The</strong> Hutton family estate at Houghton-le-Spring, was acquired in parcels by<br />

Dr. Robert Hutton, rector of that parish and prebendary of the third stall in<br />

Durham Cathedral, nephew of Matthew Hutton, archbishop of York. He was<br />

great-grandfather of Robert Hutton, baptized 3rd February, 1666, father of<br />

John Hutton of Durham named in the text. Tlie latter died unmarried.<br />

Mr. Lancelot Hilton was fifth son of Robert Hilton of Stockton, attorney,<br />

and was baptized on the 19th August, 1694. Like his father, he practised as<br />

an attorney at Stockton, where his third son William Hilton, the poet, was<br />

born. Cf. Hilton pedigree No. 4. Longstaffe, Darlington.<br />
