2.5 <strong>St</strong>akeholder Interviews<br />

<strong>St</strong>akeholder consultation was conducted during each <strong>of</strong> the three site visits to <strong>St</strong>. John’s. The format<br />

consisted <strong>of</strong> focused, one-on-one discussions with individuals or small groups comprising<br />

representatives <strong>of</strong> various stakeholders in <strong>St</strong>. John’s. These discussions covered the existing<br />

operation <strong>of</strong> <strong>Metrobus</strong>, suggestions for improvement and the identification <strong>of</strong> issues and<br />

opportunities to be addressed in the study. Representatives from the following stakeholders were<br />

consulted during the study:<br />

1. <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>. John’s staff (<strong>City</strong> Solicitor and Chief Commissioner, planning and engineering);<br />

2. <strong>Metrobus</strong> staff;<br />

3. <strong>St</strong>. John’s Transportation Commission;<br />

4. Memorial University <strong>of</strong> Newfoundland, Administration and <strong>St</strong>udent Union;<br />

5. <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>. John’s Economic Development;<br />

6. Village Shopping Centre Property Manager;<br />

7. Avalon Mall Property Manager;<br />

8. Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Seniors;<br />

9. Seniors Resource Centre <strong>of</strong> Newfoundland & Labrador;<br />

10. <strong>St</strong>. John’s Regional Fire Department;<br />

11. Downtown Development Commission;<br />

12. Canadian Petroleum Producers;<br />

13. <strong>St</strong>. John’s Board <strong>of</strong> Trade;<br />

14. Province <strong>of</strong> Newfoundland and Labrador, Department <strong>of</strong> Works, Services and<br />

Transportation; and<br />

15. Province <strong>of</strong> Newfoundland and Labrador, Department <strong>of</strong> Municipal Affairs.<br />

2.6 Focus Groups<br />

Focus groups were used to gain specific input for the <strong>St</strong>rategic Plan update as well as developing a<br />

better understanding <strong>of</strong> existing ridership patterns. The following focus groups were conducted as<br />

part <strong>of</strong> this study:<br />

Focus Group 1: <strong>St</strong>. John’s Transportation Commission Office <strong>St</strong>aff (March 22 nd , 2010)<br />

Purpose: understanding existing issues and opportunities to attract more users to the transit service<br />

and provide input into the <strong>St</strong>rategic Plan Update<br />

Focus Group 2: <strong>St</strong>. John’s Transportation Commission (March 22 nd , 2010)<br />

Purpose: Discuss study terms <strong>of</strong> reference and obtain initial feedback<br />

Focus Group 3: <strong>Metrobus</strong> Management Team (March 24 th , 2010)<br />

Purpose: Review progress on previous strategic plan and discuss issues and opportunities<br />

Focus Group 4: <strong>St</strong>. John’s Transportation Commission (May 10 th , 2010)<br />

Purpose: Provide an update on the results <strong>of</strong> the passenger survey and progress <strong>of</strong> the study<br />
